We sit in a large bus as I frantically urge my phone not to go to voicemail again. The one time, the one time, I call him and he doesn’t pick up. For God’s sake.

“Pick up, pick up, pick up.” I beg, and then the ringing stops.

“Everyone, quiet!” I yell, and to my surprise, the bus falls silent instantly.

Tom stands up at the front of the bus to see what’s going on, and makes his way down to me, wavering slightly as he walks down the aisle of the moving bus. When he sees my phone, he looks disapproving.

“Excuse me, but you aren’t meant to have contact outside of the Praetor Lupus. I’m going to have to ask you to put your phone away.” He tells me, somewhat sharply.

Who even put him in charge? Come on, Tom. You couldn’t have confiscated my phone when I was not attempting to save the entirety of New York’s Downworld? I hear muffled speech on the other end of the line as I hold my phone away from my ear to reply to Tom. I’m terrified to drop the call in case he doesn’t pick up again.

“Tom, this is really important.” I inform him desperately.

“I don’t care, it’s against the rules.” He says, and motions for me to hang up.

I hear, ‘Hello? Is this a bad time?’ on the phone and turn to Tom.

“Look, I have the High Warlock of Brooklyn on the phone talking tactics. I have to go.”

“Hi,” I say to Magnus down the phone in a rush. “Don’t go anywhere. Give me one second.”

“Hang on, you have the High Warlock of Brooklyn on the phone?” Tom says in disbelief.

“Yes.” I say simply, between reeling off instructions and information to Magnus.

“How do you know the High Warlock of Brooklyn?” Tom asks, stunned.

“He’s my boyfriend, now please, I have to go.” I say, and continue gabbling information to Magnus, my phone tucked between my ear and shoulder, writing phone numbers on my arm with a pen.

I call Jace next.

“Hi, Alec. We’re kind of…”

“Yeah, I know. Shut up for a second. I know you’re in trouble from the faeries. We’re sending in reinforcements now. Where are you?” I say, taking notes on a piece of paper Anya has shoved across to me.

“Urm, we’re on our way to Central Park to the entrance of the Seelie Court.” He replies, seemingly stunned, and I write it down quickly.

“Okay, we’re on our way.” I say. “And I need Luke’s number.”
