Krishna is considered as the eighth incarnation in most of the puranas but the ninth one in Vishnu puran. I believe that he was the eighth one because according to Vishnu puran, the eighth one is Balram, who is actually described as an incarnation of Sheshnag, Vishnu's eternal devotee. So, I think that Krishna is the eighth incarnation.

He was born to Devki and Vasudev. His maternal uncle Kans wanted to kill him because there was a prophecy that Devki and Vasudev's eighth child will kill Kans. Kans was the king of Mathura. He therefore imprisoned his sister and his brother-in-law and killed all their children. Let's just say that Kans was not an ideal king. He had the command of most of the demons in his hand. So, the subjects used to be terrified of him and used to pray for the birth of the eighth child.

Finally, because of all that energy, Krishna was born. Yogmaya, the Goddess of sleep took birth in the form of a girl in the womb of Yashodha. Yashodha's husband Nandakumar was Vasudev's friend. So, Yogmaya made sure that every soldier there is asleep before Krishna was born and all the gates and chains were unshackled. Krishna's internal energy was so much that even today, his heart beats in the idol of the Jagannath Puri temple and his energy would be so limitless that it will continue to beat, guiding the people in the kalyug.

So, Vasudev, on the command of Lord Vishnu, decided to bring Krishna to Nandakumar and to bring his daughter Yogmaya to himself. Meanwhile, Nandakumar somehow knew about what he had to do, maybe Goddess Yogmaya told him. Anyways, I don't think that this is mentioned in the Mahabharat. Maybe it is mentioned but I don't know.

Anyways, when something auspicious happens in the Indian culture, there should be rain because that resembles celebration for the farmers and basically everyone in India because India's economy system was based on the simply science of agricultural science. So, when Krishna was born, it was raining too. Vasudev had to cross River Yamuna to reach Gokul, Nandakumar's village. The water in River Yamuna kept on increasing. Vasudev pleaded to river Yamuna not to and kept baby Krishna on his head to save him from the water but she wanted to touch Krishna's feet and get his blessings. So, the water level kept on increasing till it reaches Krishna's toe and then the water level started receding.

The young Krishna was getting irritated with the rain drops. So, Sheshnag, his eternal devotee comes and covers Krishna from the rain. Finally, Vasudev takes Yogmaya and returns to Mathura where the chains get shackled again and the doors get closed.

Kans comes the next day to find a girl in Devki's lap. He quickly picks her up upward down and is about to throw her to kill her but she takes her true form and warns Kans that Kans's slayer is already far and safe from Kans, mocking him and disappears...
