Today was like any other. I woke up in an apartment of an unknown male without any knowledge of where I was. Frustrated again, I rubbed my eyes so I could see clearly as I quietly picked up my belongings and got dressed. I left the apartment only to realise I lived in the same complex just two floors up.
'At least this time I won't have to do the walk of shame' I chuckled to myself as I entered an empty elevator going up to my apartment.
I put my phone on charger as I went to shower and get dressed for work. I worked at the local book store, I didn't make much but I made enough. It was a boring job but it kept me out of sight so it was great. The uniform consisted of a pair of black jeans and a black tee with the book store logo.
I looked at myself in the mirror only to realise my eyes were green. "Shit! I left my contacts! What the hell!" I cursed my self. On further inspection I also realised my roots were starting to show. Frantically I looked for my extra pair hastily putting them on so my eyes would be brown again.
I collected my things and checked the time to see that I still had half an hour before my shift at ten. It was only a walk away so I guess I would be surprising Walter, my boss, by being early. I'm usually a few minutes late especially on days when I wake up on the other side of town.
The bell chimed as I walked in.Walter who was sorting through a few books by one of the tables snapped his head towards me. "You're..." He glanced at his watch, "fifteen minutes early today Tessa. Wow. Now that's new." He chuckled.
Well Walter was basically a nerd trapped in the body of a jock. Dirty blonde beach type hair and bright captivating eyes and well built. Rich too...considering he was the owner of the chain of book stores passed down as inheritance from his father. He liked the simple life though and spent his time reading novels and learning new things. By the way, a literature graduate.
I rolled my eyes as I set my bag behind the counter, "I just happened to wake up early okay, besides you should be happy!"
He just laughed, "The new stock has arrived so would you mind putting the books on the shelves please. I've already run them in the system and placed them in different boxes for each type from fiction to romantic novels."
"Yes sir." I replied with a smile and a salute.
Walter was about to walk to the cash register before he turned around and said, "Do put the open sign too." I nodded but before I could do that he continued, "Where is Cathy?"
Just as he asked that question she walked through the door trying to balance a box on both hands while the sling of her bag was falling which she was trying to prevent. "Here! Someone please help me with these goodies before they fall!" She yelped.
I quickly rushed to help her and she muttered a 'thanks' as I placed the box on her table.
Cathy sold cupcakes, croissants, coffee and all that to the people who would come to the book store to read for hours. She has bright red hair, blue eyes and a slim fit body. She's overall a peppy and all round positive person.
She had the simple life. Parents been happily married since forever. Learnt her love of food from her mom who used to own a bakery that unfortunately didn't work out. Decent school. Did a short baking course and here she is.
To add to the list, my only friend and also Walter's crush which didn't go unnoticed. Especially since he was frozen gawking at her right at this moment. "Earth to Walter!" I snapped my fingers as I walked past him to put the open sign outside. He blinked a couple of times before clearing his throat and going to the cash register.
Like I said in the beginning, today wasn't any different. It was all the usual, people came and left. The regulars stayed to read novels while munching on Cathy's goodies as the hours went by.
At one o'clock, he entered the store. His name is Daniel. He hadn't noticed me yet so I decided to hide behind on of the shelves. While I kept busy I hadn't noticed Cathy creep up on me.
"He's here!" She squealed from behind me.
I screamed clearly shaken as I clutched the fabric above my heart in an effort to slow it down. People in the store looked our way but I gave them an awkward smile and waved them off so I could glare at Cathy.
"I know okay! No need to creep up on me." I whisper yelled.
She held my face in her palms, "Babe, this guy may have been a random hook up gone wrong but he seems pretty serious about you. He's one of the good guys. These random guys aren't good for you. I think its about time you gave him and a shot at love a chance!"
I shook my head, "No Cathy. You know I don't do attachments. My heart is under serious lockdown."
"Look, I know we've been friends for two years now but you still haven't told me why and I'm not pushing you but whatever reason, I'm sure its time to move on and live in the present not the past. Okay?"
"Fine!" I whined as I walked up to Daniel.
Daniel is hot! Believe me. He has this fit body, clearly goes to the gym. A deep voice that just does it for me. Dark hair and light blue eyes. We met up coincidentally at clubs and I guess got to know each other. One day we slept with each other and I thought we were done but he just kept showing up.
As soon as he saw me he smiled brightly. "Hey Tessa. Look, I know you don't like me coming here but I'm just asking for one date, please."
I stopped in front of him with folded arms. "One date and if it goes badly then you'll have to stop being persistent and leave me alone."
He looked stunned but nodded, "Noted and thank you. Pick you up at seven?"
"Yeah."
I was now dressed in a long yellow summer dress and black Cardigan seated across Daniel on a picnic bench at sunset. The food was good and the conversations were light until... he asked about my past.
"So I now know that you are 23 years old. You have no family since your parents died in a car accident together. You graduated high school but never went to college. For the last five years you've been doing small jobs to maintain yourself. Correct?" He asked.
I simply responded with a nod as I bit into my tuna sandwich.
"I think you left a lot of things about yourself Tessa because what you've said has made you seem like an open book but you're not." Daniel stated.
I immediately froze and looked up to meet his eyes, "What could I possibly hide? I'm a plain Jane with brown hair, brown eyes and a boring life. I mean, I work at a freaking bookstore."
"Well, how about you explain to me what this is." Daniel's demeanour had changed at this point I felt like I was being interrogated, or maybe I was.
He removed a paper from his jacket, unfolded it then proceeded to place it on the table and slide it to me. I looked at him in confusion before looking down at the paper. Once I realised what it was I stood up.
"Who are you?" I yelled.
I looked around to see the park was empty. Of course it was in the middle of the night. This sick bastard.
He gave me a sickly smirk, "I've been trying to get you to open up to me for weeks but you clearly don't want to talk so I guess I have to take you back to headquarters."
Infuriated I slammed my hands on the table and coldly asked, "Who do you work for?"
"The FBI and you are under arrest." He announced before shadows emerged from behind the trees and I was pushed on the table as my hands were held behind my back before I was put in handcuffs.
