"I am not going anywhere Leo."He looked shocked to say the least, "What?"
I folded my hands. "I'm going to stay here, I am not going anywhere. You may have forgotten this but I am still your wife."
"You forgot that yourself Beth, not me." He countered.
The door suddenly barged open revealing a lean figure with dark hair and brown eyes dressed in a black and white tuxedo...Christian.
"Who the hell are you?" Leo yelled, his frustration clearly visible on his face.
Christian came to stand in between Leo and I, "Hey!" he said looking peppy as usual as if we were not in a tense atmosphere. Chris held his hand out to Leo, "I'm Christian, Miss Winters...my bad...I mean Mrs Lyon has hired me as her personal bodyguard."
Leo looked at me over Chris' shoulder. "So this is how it is now. Are you fucking him too?"
"No, I hired him for protection." I defended, my hands falling to my sides.
Chris retrieved his hand which was left hanging, "Okay..." he said in an awkward manner.
Leo held an accusing finger at me. "This isn't over."
He grabbed his jacket and exited the room slamming the door behind causing me to flinch. I removed the earpiece and threw it on the floor crushing it under my heel in anger.
"Should I do something dramatic too, maybe break a glass? Wait...you guys already beat me to it!" Chris chuckled moving around the room. Ignoring his comment I grabbed the bottle of whiskey and continued drinking. Why is it so hard to face your past?
Chris was now laying on the floor under the table. I walked around the table to get a closer look, "What are you doing?"
His head peeked out for a few seconds. "Putting wires so we can hear anything that happens in here."
Satisfied with his answer I took a seat on the chair. Leo wasn't going to come back not only because he was hosting a party but I knew he didn't want to see my face, not right now at least.
"Did you ever love him?" Chris questioned still working on his wiring under the table. I made a sound of approval since I had liqour in my mouth. "Then why did you run away?"
I sighed, "That's not your concern Agent Reid."
Chris got up and walked up to me. He placed his hands on each arm chair his face inches from mine. A lock of hair falling over his right eye. "I fail to understand why a wife would repeatedly cheat on her husband if she loves him."
I don't know whether it was the alcohol in my system or the fire in my blood. I leaned forward mingling our breaths together. With our eyes locked I answered him. "It got rid of the loneliness, guilt and the nightmares."
I saw an emotion in Christian's eyes...concern. "Nightmares from before or after Leo."
"Both."
I pushed Christian away from me as emotions began to take over. I stood by a window to let some fresh air hit my face. It was now burning as my past resurfaced.
"My dad took his life when I was seven," I began.
I heard it become quiet behind me. A sign that Christian was listening.
"...my mom she...she didn't take it too well. She couldn't bear the loneliness and guilt. She blamed herself causing her many sleepless nights. One day she met a man, she seemed happier and she started to be there in my life again. It wasnt until I was 12 that I realised she looked more dead than ever.
She was addicted to drugs. To run away from her nightmares, she took drugs. That man was the one who introduced her to them." I choked out.
My throat was burning. "When they were high let's just say I saw things a small child shouldn't, things a 12 year old shouldn't have to deal with. Things that haunt me to this day."
"I'm sorry you had to go through that Elizabeth."
I shook my head."I guess I learnt nothing from my past. Like mother like daughter am I right? To escape reality for a while she turned to drugs and I turned to sex." I chuckled.
"You are too young to let the world break you."
I turned around to look at him from across the room, "Huh?"
"My grandmother used to say that to me when I was young. My parents divorced when I was 16 and I thought there was going to be a custody battle or something for me but neither of them wanted the burden of a teenager. I felt unwanted and that really fucked me up." Chris revealed.
I felt sorry for him but before I could say anything he continued, "Life is tough Elizabeth but so are you."
His words hit me hard."Thanks Chris, also I'm sorry about your parents too."
"Let's leave all that." He said with his signature smile plastered on his face. "Come one...smile! Its the second best thing you can do with your lips."
I gasped before giggling. "And what's the first?"
He shrugged with a mischievous glint in his eye, "I thought 'talking' was the first. What were you thinking?"
"Oh please!" I laughed.
It felt good to genuinely laugh after some time and for a while I had forgotten everything.
