"Taehyung, make sure you wash those apples before putting them on the table for the children." Myieon said, the male omega nodding before taking the freshly collected apples in another basket and walking towards the clean river that flowed nearby their pack grounds.
He crouched down, leaning on his knees as he washed the fruits in the cold water, his reflection staring right back at him. His dark hair was long enough to cover his eyes but Taehyung liked it like that now and he enjoyed the flowery smell it gave off after he washed it with the scented soaps the others got from the nearby towns whenever they left to restock on supplies they couldn't make on their own.
After he finished washing the apples he got up, eating one on his way back to the pack. As an omega he didn't get a lot of food since their meat was mainly reserved for the children, the pregnant and the elderly. He was young, healthy, so he resumed on eating fruits and vegetables and sometimes leftover cold meat. Other mated omegas had plenty to munch on if their mates knew how to hunt but since Taehyung was alone, not even accepting courting offers of food, he didn't have those supplies. He thought it was fine like that since he wasn't that much of an eater anyway. He only felt needs when his heats came close but those only happened twice a year so it wasn't that disturbing.
After finally arriving back at the pack Taehyung let the basket on the outside table, watching the children come and get them happily before sitting down to munch on them with their small teeth. Smiling, he walked inside the main house, looking for a few books he could borrow and read in the clearing as he always did.
His parents were inside, alongside Jeongguk's and other advisors of the pack, their eyes rough as they talked about something that seemed important. They turned towards him when he entered, his mother smiling as his father waved cheerfully.
"Taehyung, have you heard the good news?" He asked, Taehyung's eyes going from him to his mother and Jeongguk's parents, brows lowered into a questioning frown.
They were all smiling now but Taehyung never fully liked Jeongguk's parents, especially his mother. They were both rough people, stern, but his father had some nice sides to him. He liked Taehyung since he thought he'd mate with Yoongi and bring them fortune but his wife was worse, always watching them all with her red eyes and deadly stare. Taehyung never understood why Jeongguk's mother was like that, always having her eyes ready to force anyone into submission, crimson, angry, her claws out like she was prepared to slash anyone that stepped over her and broke her rules. She was lethal and Taehyung feared her but he tried to ignore her most of the time.
"What good news?" He mumbled, trying to avoid the woman that was staring at him.
Jeongguk's father was smiling now, something unusual, and Taehyung felt fear creep into him. Were they forcing him to leave with Yoongi the next time he came? Were those good news? However, after hearing the following words, Taehyung felt his world shift under his feet.
"Jeongguk's coming home in a few days."
Taehyung knew that he had to contain his pheromones, to only seem happy that his best friend was coming home, so he just smiled, nodding, walking right out the door in the next moment, forgetting the books he's actually come to get. He ran as fast as he could towards their spot, leaning on the grass, finally releasing the happiness and need bubbling inside him. Taehyung cried there, and cried, until the darkness of the night came, but he never left, sleeping there and hoping that, when he'll wake up, Jeongguk will already be there.
The following morning came, finding Taehyung still curled on the grass, shivering from the cold breeze of the night. Whenever they'd fall asleep there, Jeongguk would shift and keep him warm with his wolf but now, that he was alone, the cold air of the night was harsher.
He got up, stretching his limbs before he made sure that his pheromones and certain happiness couldn't be detected, walking back to the pack with fast steps, hoping that he'll find Jeongguk already waiting for him. Unfortunately, when he entered the grounds, the scents were all the same, which meant that the others have not yet arrived. Taehyung's waited five years so a few more days weren't going to be that harsh.
He occupied himself with other things, playing with the pups and teaching them how to shift, helping the other omegas cook and pick up vegetables or fruit from their gardens, caring for the elderly that needed guidance. He did everything that could make the time pass faster but nothing worked so the following two days were the longest he's ever lived. He felt every second pass like it was meant to never do so, like time was standing still for him.
On the third day Taehyung woke up peacefully, doing the same routine of picking up fresh vegetables and fruit to eat before a few pups asked him to play with them. He laid on the grassy ground, letting a few girls braid his short hair as he told the other children stories his mother used to tell him and Jeongguk when they were their age.
"My papa says strong people are coming home soon but he says that they're dangerous, Tae." One of them, a boy that had a promising future as an alpha, said, eyes squinted with worry as he played with the flowers Taehyung gave him.
Taehyung smiled towards him, leaning in to ruffle his hair before he cupped his cheeks, making the other kids laugh. "Strong people are indeed coming but they're coming to protect us. They used to live here before you were born, baby. They had to leave and train in order to become strong for their pack and families."
The boy's eyes sparkled as he started laughing, jumping in Taehyung's lap from excitement. "Will I become strong too? Like them?"
Chuckling, Taehyung ruffled his hair before he put his arms around him, getting up and picking the boy in his arms before throwing him in the air. He didn't have much muscle so it was hard for him to do so but he enjoyed the smiles the children portrayed whenever they played together.
"You'll get just as strong, just like my Jeongguk is, baby. You'll grow and protect the ones you love, right?"
He stayed there until they all fell asleep on the grass, more omegas coming to cover them up or shift themselves in order to keep the children warm. Taehyung got up, getting ready to go into the clearing since it was almost noon, when everyone either went hunting or slept.
Taehyung almost never shifted in front of other people since his wolf was weak and couldn't really keep him safe so he just relied on his human form instead, walking slowly and carefully until he reached the clearing, a book held tight in his hand as he carried a blanket in the other. He only shifted when he was alone, in the clearing, but even those times were rare. When he finally arrived, he set up the blanket and laid on it, letting the soft breeze of air ruffle his hair, arms splayed around him as the sun warmed up his face. The scent of the flowers enveloped him, masking him and other wolves from finding each other, making him feel safe in that place he loved so much.
A smile appeared on his face as he let his eyes close and he found himself curling and falling asleep, hope blooming inside him.
"I'm still waiting, Jeongguk, but I can't do it for much longer so just hurry up."
