Note this is After the Fall*

"I'm family huh?" John ask slightly astounded.
"Of course you are." If only John could be quicker to catch on.
"I'm touched honestly." He says tenderly.
"Don't get used to it." I snort.
"I don't plan on it, we both know how your manners go. Remember Buckingham Palace and the sheet?" We laugh together reminiscing.
"I prefer you to Mycroft." He grins at me.
"I prefer you to just about everyone."
"Sherlock - I'm a genius - Holmes being sappy?"
"I'm your best friend Watson, after everything we've been through together I reserve the right to be sentimental."
"I can't argue with that." He reached across the couch to take my hand. We make eye contact.
"It's us against the world." He says lightly with a small smile and squeezes my hand
"Always, John." His face turns serious.
"Meaning you're never leaving again, right Sherlock? No more fake suicides?"
"I promised you a million times, never ever again." Unless it was to save John I'd never leave him I think to myself.
"I just like to be reminded." His voice is gentle, unlike the anger that colored it after my return. I don’t think it was anger, just deep hurt. I'm still working to fix all the hurt I caused John. For now the only thing I have to offer is soothing violin, my company, and my promises.
"As your best friend, I swear to never break my promise." I want to add unless your life is on the line but I will never let John's life be on the line again, he's too important to me.
We're still holding hands, we do this much more often since I returned, I think it's because we both crave the connection and lack of distance. John has a habit of rubbing little curcles on the back of my hand with his thumb; it's oddly soothing.
John hums and turns on some crap telly, he closes the distance between us and lays his head on my shoulder. I smile a bit, John's closeness has always touched me. I allow myself to revel in the fact I'm alive and next to John. If this was all there was to my life it'd be a life well lived.
