It's a pretty old scene but remember when Smithers asked Jughead if Veronica was doing well? When it happened i was so confused because why would the writers make Jughead the one to be asked about Veronica's wellbeing when they weren't even dating. Like wouldn't it make more sense for Smithers to ask Archie? i know that Jughead was getting private information from Smithers at that time but it still doesn't make sense why the writers HAD to make Smithers ask Jughead about Veronica.

This type of scene is one that feels like it will play out in the future because it is part of a bigger puzzle.
Like for example the scene that Betty tells Jughead about Gladys being the drug dealer and Jughead asks her who told her about his mother (and we know it was Veronica and we know he asked for secrecy) and Betty says it is a friend.
I believe that the reaction of Jughead, who was surprised. It could mean that it was there that he started to question how it would affect Veronica. Because at the moment he hadn't considered that she was a victim of this whole situation. And like it or not, whenever Jughead says or does something involving Hiram he always shows consideration for Veronica.
