Chapter 45
Charles POV
I sat there still after the meeting was done. All the other parents walked out of the room in search of their children. I, on the other hand, am not. I'm the cause of the accident. Caytlyn was texting me back after the text message I sent her. How could I have done this to my own daughter? One of the doctors must have noticed me starting to cry, and came and sat next to me. "Are you okay, Charles?" He asked. I shook my head. "I caused the accident...." I said in a whisper. I wiped the tears from my eyes, and heard the doctor sigh. "Charles, not one person here should be to blame for the accident." He said. I shook my head and took out my phone. "No, I have proof. See, here." I opened up my messages and went to Caytlyn's messages. "I sent this text message at 4:01pm, and Caytlyn responded at 4:03pm. The accident happened at 4:03pm." I said. I locked my phone and slid it across the table. "Charles, it doesn't mean you're to blame. In all retrospect, the truck that hit them was in the wrong lane." He said. "Still, if she wouldn't have been texting me, this never would've happened." I said. I looked at the text message from Alli that read, "Char? Where are you?" I close my phone and put my head in my hands. "Where's your wife today, Charles?" He asked, concerned. "She's at home." I told him. "Does she know that you're here?" He asked. I shook my head, and he sighed. "Do you want to see Caytlyn?" He asked again. I shook my head. "I'm fine." He nodded. "If you want to, just go down that hallway and she's the fourth door on your left." He said. He got up from his chair and walked down the hallway. I grabbed my phone and called Alli. "Hello?" "Hey." I replied back. I wipe a few stray tears from my eyes. "Char, where are you?" I sighed, "I'm at the hospital." I heard her sigh on the other side. "Please tell me you didn't have another seizure." "Nope, just sitting here." I said. I have a feeling she must've gotten the hint of where I was. "Char, she'll wake up. Just give it some time, please." I sighed and shook my head, even though she couldn't see. "I gotta go. Bye." "Bye Charles." With that, the line cut off. Mine and Alli's relationship hasn't been going out so well recently. There's just so much stress going on right now, and we've been yelling constantly over the past few months. Maybe that's why Caytlyn spent so much time outside of the house. She must've known we were fighting all the time. I stand up and push in my chair. After all, you have to be polite, somewhat. I grab my phone off the table and slide it into my pocket. I struggle to take my first step towards the hallway, but I did. And with that, I made another, and another, and another, up till I got to the fourth room on the left. I take a breath and prepare myself for what I'm about to see. Because, the last time I saw Caytlyn was when she said goodbye as she left for school that morning. I turn the corner and walk into the room. Her room is empty, with the only sounds of beeping coming from the various machines. Caytlyn's in the middle of the room with dozens of wires hooked up to her. It breaks my heart to see her this hurt. She has a cast on her left leg, and one on her left wrist too. I pull up a chair that's near her bed and sit next to her. I grab her hand gently and read the bracelet on her wrist. 'DNR' read the purple bracelet. Cayt, you gotta respond. We need you. I look at her swollen little hand that's interlocked with mine. "Please don't leave Caytlyn." I said in a whisper. "I need you. Alli needs you. Tyler needs you. Your family needs you. The CTFxC needs you." CTFxC.... Shit. I forgot to vlog something today. And I forgot to edit the vlog. God damn it, Charles! I grab my phone and text Alli. "Can you edit the vlog if you're not busy, please? I'll upload it when I get home." I sent it and slid the phone back into my pocket. I squeeze her hand, and then kiss it. "I love you Cayt..." I whisper. I get a text back from Alli. "Yeah, no problem." A huge thing of weight was lifted off my shoulders. I felt something squeeze my hand. It can't be..... I look over at Caytlyn, who's still not awake. But how? All of a sudden, the machines go off with a whole bunch of alarms. Three nurses run into the room, and run immediately to Caytlyn. One of the nurses goes and checks her pulse, while another checks her heart. "Nothing." One of them says. "Nothing here, either." The other one says. "She's coding, get on that loud speaker and call the nurses." One of the nurses said. "You, get him out of here." She said to the other one. The nurse came over and escorted me out of the room, to the waiting room just outside. The loud speaker went off and you heard 'Code Blue in ICU 4'. I sigh and the take a seat on the couch. The nurse joins me, and plays with her badge. "Aren't you suppose to be in there?" I asked. She shakes her head. "I'm an intern, and that's not my doctor I'm working with." She said. I nod in agreement to her. "So, what does a code blue mean then?" I asked her. She looks at me, and sighs. "It means that she stopped breathing." She said. Oh. I get a text from Alli in my pocket. "How's Cayt doing?" I sigh and type the dreaded words I've never thought I'd have to write. "She stopped breathing...."
