Awkward

The next day at school, Will felt like a weight had been taken off his chest. Mike really likes me too! Will thought, excited.

The first person of his friend group he saw that pleasant morning was Max.

"So, how did your confession go?" Max asked warmly. "You seem happy." She pointed out.

"Mike admitted he liked me back, and we hugged." Will replied, reliving the memory.

"Aww, that's it? Anyhow, El and I are kinda a couple now." Max responded nonchalantly.

"Really! That's great! Congrats!" Will was a little taken aback by this, but supportive all the same. He only wished he could say him and Mike were dating. Unfortunately the evening had ended with Mike saying they would see each other at school the next day and could discuss it then. Perhaps he hadn't wanted to rush into anythings, or perhaps he wanted to wait until tomorrow to establish anything because he wanted to make sure it wasn't a dream.

The bell rang, pulling Will out of his wondering.

"Well, I have to go. Bye, hope you and Mike start dating, you're perfect for each other!" Max whispered before skateboarding down the hall with a wave.

As he wandered off towards math class, the only class he had with none of his friends, Will stood, blushing. Perfect? I really hope so.

Mike headed off to his first class, science. He had attempted to cram in some information for today's test last night, but his thoughts were too clouded to focus much. Mike just hoped he didn't fail science.

Mr.Clarke passed around the test papers. Mike picked up his pencil as soon as he got his. He answered a few questions but was frequently distracted by thoughts of the one and only Will Byers. Mike thought about talking to him later about their discussion yesterday, struggling to finish the test.

Mike hurriedly finished the rest of his test and pretended to read a book. Should I have asked him out? What if he isn't ready for that? Does he think I'm not ready for that kind of commitment?  What will the rest of the group think?

His thoughts were interrupted by the bell. The next class Mike had was wood shop again. A class he had with just Will. A perfect opportunity to talk about things.

Mike grabbed his things and nervously strode into the wood shop classroom. He found Will sitting alone at their usual table. Mike took the seat next to him.

Will turned and smiled awkwardly. Mike returned his smile just as awkwardly.

They were silent as Ms.Davut explained some directions. Once they were asked to start, Mike and Will stayed silent for a few more awkward moments.

"I'll go get the wood." Will broke the silence. Mike nodded.

Will came back in a few moments and laid the wood on the table.

"Alright. We need to cut a curve into these pieces." Mike pointed out. "And later we can attach the legs to the base."

They worked silently, only talking when there was an issue or a question.

Will was contemplating asking about what went down yesterday right as Mike spoke up. "So, I just wanted to say I meant what I said yesterday. I really do like you, Will." He smiled awkwardly again.

Will couldn't help but blush.

"So uh, do you want to maybe, um, catch a movie tonight?" Mike asked nervously.

Will's eyes widened and his face turned scarlet. Is my crush Mike Wheeler asking me out on a date?  He thought frantically. "Yeah. That sounds nice."

And with that they continued their projects, but neither of them were focused on it.
