Dean growled. He boyfriend Castiel was fifteen minutes late to their date, and he began to wonder if Cas had stood him up despite the fact that they had been dating for well over a year.
He shifted uncomfortably on the bench. He was at a small park, surrounded by beautiful trees and flowers. It had been the location of his and Castiel's first date, and Dean had been hoping for it to be their last date as "boyfriends".
Dean jumped all of the sudden. His phone had gone off and started ringing. He checked and saw the it was Sam, which freaked him out because he knew Sam would never call him on a date unless it was important.
"Hello?" Dean asked nervously.
"D-Dean!? Hospital! Car wreck! Cas! Come quick." Sam hung up, presumably to go comfort his boyfriend, Gabriel, who happened to be Cas's adopted brother. He was probably also how Sam had found out before him.
"What am I doing? I gotta go!" Dean jumped up and started sprinting towards his car. He probably broke several laws getting to the hospital but it didn't matter because Cas was hurt and he wasn't there.
Dean ran into the lobby, frantically looking around for Sam or Gabe. When he finally spotted them, he quickly strode over and hugged Sam, needing a bit of comfort.
"How is he?" He asked desperately.
"Cas? He's not g-h-he's not good," Gabriel said weakly. He had taken it hard. "He's got a bad concussion and a couple of broken b-bones." Tears slid down his face and Sam broke away from Dean to go hug him.
"Is that all?" Dean asked gently, because if it was, then that would be alright. Cas would be fine.
Gabriel sobbed. "One of those bones is-is his s-spine," he buried his face in Sam's chest. "He may never walk again," came his muffled voice.
Dean's leg suddenly felt weak and for some reason, the world was tilting sideways.
"Dean!" He heard Sam's voice and came to his senses. He had collapsed on the damn hospital floor. And his face was itchy. When he went to go and scratch it, his fingers came away wet. He was crying.
He sat up. "Yeah Sammy?"
Sam rolled his eyes. "You collapsed. Don't look at me like there's nothing wrong. Because there is. I think you can go and see him. Do you want to?"
Dean nodded, tears still leaking down his face. What is Cas really never walked again? It would crush him. Especially considering that Cas's job was a college psychology professor and he enjoyed teaching his material while standing. He liked to give "3D lectures" as he put it, where he or the students would act the lessons out.
Dean took and deep breath and pushed himself up off the floor and began taking shaking steps toward the door while Sam nodded encouragingly at him.
He pushed through the door and nearly fell back over when he saw Castiel. A large cut swept over Cas's forehead down to his jaw, and his left arm was covered in a cast. His legs were propped up on something, probably to make sure they didn't atrophy or whatever it was called.
"Cas?" Dean called out, albeit weakly.
Cas cracked one eye open and smiled as much as he could. "Hello Dean."
"Cas what happened? I was so worried when Sam called me! Are you okay? What happened?" Dean asked frantically.
Cas's smiled vanished. "I was driving to meet you when a car appeared out of nowhere and hit my side of my car." He waved his right arm. "As you can see I took a hit."
Dean tried to chuckle but it came out as a whine. "Are you okay? Can I hug you?"
"Yes Dean, you an hug me. But I would prefer if you actually climbed into bed with me and carefully hugged me," Castiel responded, gently patting the right side of the small hospital bed.
"Okay," Dean whispered as he crossed the room. He climbed in very slowly, so as to not hurt Cas.
Once they were settled, Castiel started talking about random things to distract Dean, who couldn't stop thinking about what he could have done to prevent this and why he didn't.
"I was going to propose tonight," Dean blurted out. Then he slapped his hand over his mouth. Why?! Why did I say that?
Castiel turned his head so he could look at Dean? "You were?" He breathed.
Dean nodded, staring down at his hands. He felt Cas lean his head on his shoulder.
"Yes."
Dean looked up in surprise. "Yes, what?"
"Yes to marrying you. I thought that was obvious?" Cas said, not understanding how he just turned Dean's day around.
Dean smiled, forgetting all that was bad and only knowing Cas in that moment. "Really?" He murmured, nervous that the answer would change.
"Really." Cas responded with such certainty that Dean knew the answer would never change.
"Can I kiss you, Cas?"
"Yes, Dean."
I didn't want to write smut, which I presume was the thought behind this prompt, so I did this instead.
