I woke up Saturday morning at 8am and went straight out to Moonshine. I saddled her up and walked her outside into the open. I put my foot in her stirrup and got on.
She started walking when I quicked her lightly.
"Come on Moonshine, show me what you got." I patted her side.
She took off galloping. I almost lost my hat but I eventually got steady. She ran along the open grass and up a near by hill. I felt like I was on top of the world. I smiled. The wind on my face eventually got really cold so I had to slow her down. She slowly started walking me back towards the barn.
"Moonshine you're the only one who listens and really knows me." I ran my fingers through her mane.
"You're the best thing in my life."
We got back to the barns and I got off. I know she didn't want me to but I knew I had to. I put her in the outside fenced off area. I figured she was tired of being cooped up. That's when I heard my dad.
"Benny, less time with the horse more time getting the other things done. Are the pigs fed?" I saw him walking up the small hill.
"No."
"The cows?"
"No, how come you wont help?" I asked.
"Oh I do, trust me."
"I really don't think you do." I said as I walked past.
"Where are you going son?".
" Somewhere, why don't you finish up the work and get off your lazy ass."
"Benjamin you get you ass back here now." He yelled as I picked up my walking speed.
"I think I'm good." I said as I continued walking. I went inside and grabbed my keys and then took off in my truck.
__
I ended up going to a small diner called Kay's. I sat up at the counter. There were 2 other older men also there but I sat at the farthest stool away.
"What would you like?" An old women behind the counter asked.
"Can I get an orange juice and maybe some hash browns. And two eggs scrambled."
"Sure thing baby." She walked away.
I got out my phone and looked at the 5 texts from my father. I ignored them and put my phone down. As I had put my phone down someone sat right next to me.
"Well if it isn't Benny." I looked up and saw Paisley.
Wow just wonderful.
"What brings you here?" I asked.
"Why I was about to ask you the same thing. Actually saw your truck parked so i decided to stop by."
"Oh... That was probably not necessary." I said thinking about how this morning could get much worse.
"Hey I'm bored and I don't have many friends yet. So why are you here looking so glummy?"
"Just had to get away from my Dad and the farm for a bit."
"I get it. Everyone needs their alone time."
I looked at Paisley.
"Oh alone time yeah I can leave I'm sorry."
"No its fine." I say hoping he really will leave.
"Alright then well what's good to eat?"
Sadly Paisley stayed and ate some food. We talked about nothing interesting. How the NHL season was going, more about Moonshine. Finally I was ready to leave.
"Well this was fun, I guess I should get back now." I said.
"Oh the way you sound it doesnt really seem like you wanna go back. Why don't you come to my new house. Look at some of my memorabilia."
"Thanks Paisley but I..."
"Hey I know what later tonight let's go to the ice rink. There's a free skate we can show off to all the people who can't skate. Its great fun."
"I don't think..."
"Yes you'll be there at 7."
Paisley got up and left. Okay bye.
__
Sadly it was 7 and I was lacing up my skates next to Paisley. I really dont know why I showed up. I guess I was just trying to be nice.
"So when you went back home what did your dad say?" Paisley asked.
"Nothing. He was asleep."
"Oh haha I guess that works."
We skated around a bit. I keep the amount of words I spoke to a minimum.
People fell we didn't. I used to find it funny but maybe I grew out of that stage.
"Hey I wanna show you this place." Paisley grabbed me and we walked out into the hall. We eventually came to a this door and we went through. There was little light and it looked like just your average storage room.
I wasn't sure what I was expecting. Now that I look back on it I should of figured it out. All the weird stares and wanting to especially get to know me better. I guess I just wasnt picking up the signs. Girls are overrated. And only bring you down. I guess maybe I shouldn't have said I had been out of the girlfriend scene for so long. These are all things I regret not picking up on.
We were both standing there. I was in complete confusion when he got close and kissed me. At first It wasn't like much of a romantic kiss really. More like we weren't touching and he simply kissed me. Then he pulled me in closer and kept kissing. It felt like forever but I guess it was more like 3 seconds probably. I don't really know. I stood back and looked at him. Then I ran. I ran out and I just ran. I threw my skates off and ran to my truck. I didn't say one word. I ran and then drove. I drove to my house. I ran into my kitchen and grabbed a knife and then went into the bathroom and slammed the door shut.
