Elfrida
It was on day 8 that we finally got to chase our biggest lead this case has seen. Malik was able to find someone to help him locate the owner of the house connected to the Research Lab as it wasn't the couple that we'd found murdered in the house. I was actually excited to be following up on this lead. It felt like the case was finally coming to a close.
"Will you be back tonight," Tavi asked, watching me from the bed as I got dressed.
"I think so. We are just going to Madison. Hopefully when I come back, I'll have good news," I said.
I turned to kiss her, and Mel knocked on the door, effectively ruining the moment. I brushed my lips over hers but much quicker than I had intended. She smiled and told me she loved me.
"Love you, too," I said.
"Text me when you make it to Madison," she said.
"I will," I said.
I opened the door just enough to slip out without Mel catching a glance of my very naked lover. Mel was bright eyed as usual. She smiled at me and held out a cup of coffee.
"You ready to go," she asked, excitement filled her voice.
"Oh, yeah. So, we're going to this address," I said repeating the address that Malik's friend had gotten for us.
"Right, it should only take about an hour and fifteen minutes. Hopefully this will be the end of this whole thing," she said punching the address into the GPS.
"What if they already know we are coming and have either cleared the place out or have another small army waiting for us," I asked.
Her eyes flashed orange and I knew it was her dragon soul peering at me from the depths of her consciousness. I wondered what it would be like to fight by her side. I really didn't want to find out because we were outnumbered and backed into a corner, though.
"A few members of the SFS will be waiting right outside while we talk to the potential owners. Also, we will be joined by my colleague Annabelle Strom. She is a psychic and will be able to tell if they are lying to us or not. I am confident that if things go south, I can get you out and our back up will take care of things," Mel said.
"As long as you have a contingency plan in place," I said.
The highway zoomed by. I was focused on the mission ahead. Or at least I tried to be. I couldn't help but let my thoughts wander to Emersyn who was alone in enemy territory. If she and Octavian got themselves into trouble, they would be alone. And it would take hours for us to get to them. Everything about that made me feel uneasy.
During our friendship Emersyn and I rarely went a couple days without seeing each other so for her to be gone for 8 days was unprecedented. Video chatting only eased some on my separation anxiety, not that I would ever tell Syn or Tavi that I had separation anxiety. I was holding it together pretty well so far.
"So how are things going up in Minocqua," Mel asked, seemingly reading my thoughts.
"When I last talked to Emersyn, she said O wasn't any closer to figuring out who was poisoning Quintus Osther. I hope they figure it out soon, though. I can't imagine how bored she must be," I said.
"She's not helping Octavian," Mel asked.
"The wolves weren't happy that she was there with him. I don't think her helping would actually help," I said.
"Pack business and all," she said with a nod.
"Wolves are so stubborn," I grunted.
"All lycanthropes are stubborn, hate to break it to you," she said with a smile.
