they sang praises to the powerful
and wonderful king arthur
with his glittering jewels and
his loud laugh.
but soon they realized
arthur's weak heart and
ache for all-consuming power
were no match for the weight of the throne.
so they looked to lancelot
with his soft sureness
and his quiet strength
and they leaned on his shoulder
when times got tough,
and guenivere was sure
that lancelot was her knight in shining armor
and that lancelot, for all his hardness,
would never take the sword at his belt
and stab it through her heart
without so much as a cursory glance.
but the people of camelot were wrong
and guienivere was wrong.
lancelot is nothing more
than another man in falsely shiny armor
that attempts to infiltrate
the strongest of kingdoms
just so that he may take the hearts
of the people he swears to protect
and crush them between his fingers.
guienivere wanted nothing more
than to breathe without the fear
of anyone's hands around her throat,
and she thought that lancelot was the one
that would look after her
and be patient with her fears
and lookinto her soul before
he looked under her dress.
but lancelot is not the man she thought he was,
because arthur never pretended to be
anything but the monster he was,
but lancelot used his soft words
and his quiet demenor
and his blue, blue eyes
to infiltrate guinevere's heart,
and take her priceless possessions
and throw her love on the floor
like a useless tin shield.
guienevere never needed
the soft assaults of lancelot
but she thought that maybe,
if this man with his blue eyes
and his blonde hair
and his quiet laugh
wanted to know more
than her soft flesh
then maybe she would open up the gates
and allow him refuge in her heart,
but guienevere was wrong,
because lancelot never wanted anything more
than flesh and praise and worship,
just as arthur wanted,
and he would do anything
and hurt anyone
to get it.
