Jack decided to get some breakfast. He ate some cereal and milk, and then decided to meet with the Adventurer's Guild through his smartblock. The classic sword and shield logo of their app amused him.
"Hey, so how does this adventuring thing work" Jack typed on the discussion forums.
"Welcome to the guild! Guess you must want an induction or something? Could we call you up?" wrote Ryan Rogers.
"Sure, whatever." Jack typed back. He wasn't particularly keen, but he somehow had a hunch that the guild could help them back home. "We could just discover another portal, right?" Jack thought.
Jack accepted the call, and the smartblock's screen showed three faces with their names on top. Ryan Rogers was an old man with puffy cheeks, roughly in his forties. His bushy moustache gave him a slightly comical look, and nachos crisps were visible on his black shirt. The guy in the middle was Tony Park, much younger, almost looking like a teenager with his clean shaven white face and brown curly hair. The last one was Adam Runner, a black-haired man with a short beard, who seemed nervous and jittery in his manner.
"So, Jack...Foster." Ryan said in an offhand, distracted manner.
"Yes, that's me." Jack replied.
"Well, the thing is we are working on a satellite project with the tech department." said Adam rapidly.
"Which means they are working on it." Tony added cheekily.
"Yes. We are not going on expeditions to the Town of Death." said Steve.
"What? What's that?" Jack asked.
"Well, our last expedition landed at that point. They informed us there was a whole landing pad for them. And then comms cut out." Steve sighed.
"Didn't you try to bring them back?"
"No, we didn't. We lost our entire team of 10 adventurers. Everyone left the guild, except us. We aren't risking it again." Steve said firmly, while Adam shivered.
"They must be hostile, whoever is there." Jack said nonchalantly.
"What?" Tony asked.
"I said they must be hostile. Armed with weapons, you know?" Jack replied tersely.
"But why did they attack our unarmed explorers? We meant no harm!" Adam cried.
"Some people are like that. Why did you go in unarmed?" Jack answered.
"Hummm, I never considered that." Steve paused for thought.
"Of course we should go in fully armored and weapons blazing. Don't you want to take revenge for your lost team?" Jack said.
"That sounds cool, but what do you get out of it?" Tony asked.
"Because I think I might find something that helps me get back home." Jack replied. Tony smirked, while Adam was sweating. Steve had his eyes half-closed in thought.
"I know its highly unlikely, but I'll take whatever chance life gives me. Someone else is suffering due to my stupid decisions. I must help Jill get back to her home and family."
"You know what, let's do it." Steve said, waking up in full alertness all of a sudden.
"Awesome!" Tony said.
"What??" Adam screeched shrilly.
"Today, at 6 in the evening. Strike while the iron's hot." Steve said, his chubby face lighting up with a smile.
"What??!" Adam panicked even more.
"Crazy but freaking awesome!!" Tony said with shrieks of excitement.
"I'll arrange access to the weapons stored from the ancient wars, Tony-"
"Yeah I'll get the armor, space suits would do right?"
"Adam, you better get an aircraft ready and learn to fly it. I'm sure Allbackup will help."
"I think I'll pass out for a few years, don't mind me." Adam replied, head in his hands.
"Jack...you-" Steve paused, thinking what task he could assign to Jack. "You craft our first message to the hostiles."
"Yessir." Jack replied, smiling a bit at the craziness of their bunch.
"Adventurer's Guild is back!!" Tony yelled.
"Adventurers, prepare for adventure!" he yelled.
"That was cringe." Adam replied, still wringing his hair.
"Get ready for the mission of our lives, boys. Over and out." Steve said, as they disconnected the call. Now that was catchy.
Jack took up his smartblock and messaged Jill.
"Hey, how you doing?" no reply.
"Hope you are having fun at art." Jack realized she must be busy.
"Well, the guild has planned an expedition. It could be dangerous. Do you want to come?"
"Or should I even go? I feel that it'll help us reach back home. Let me know. Call or text me when you are free."
Jack decided to wait for Jill's reply, as he didn't want to go without asking her. It didn't feel right, they were in this together. But Steve wanted them to go right away, and Jack couldn't refuse. "What if he never agrees again?" Jack thought.
"If successful, it would be an awesome surprise for her, but if we failed, then what?" he thought to himself. To keep the morbid thoughts out of his mind, he opened his smartblock, and found that it had quite some good shows and music to pass the time till evening.
