Scorching heat welcomed David’s body as he stepped down the bus, warm breeze mixed with the sun’s rays engaging in a battle of dominance against his skin. He lifted his arms, stretching his bones in relief. After spending five long hours on a bus, they’ve finally arrived in Tabuk – the capital city of Kalinga.
He turned around, watching as his companions stepped down the vehicle.
"Ah, finally!" Pastor Nestor remarked, "Come on everyone, let's go. The jeep going to Batong Buhay is gonna depart any minute."
They all began to walk at his word, following behind him as they crossed the street. Tricycles and other vehicles roamed the streets freely, the sound of busy chatter ringing in the air.
David took in the sight, his vision occupied by people scattered around the streets. He lowered his gaze and glanced at his watch.
7:48 am
He turned towards Pastor Nestor. “Did you text the Jeepney Driver for confirmation, Pastor?”
The older man nodded in confirmation, “Yes, David,” He too glanced down at his watch, “The Driver said the Jeepney’s already half full. They’re waiting for us.”
With this, David hastened in his steps, peering over his shoulder to signal the others. The view of the three ladies and Jake occupied his perception, all equally perspiring due to the intense temperature. Amusement bubbled from his core as he watched Zarinna catch her breath, her face glowing red in heat.
“Come on guys,” He began, “We need to hurry, the jeepney's waiting for us.”
They hastened their steps as his word, walking behind him as they advanced. After a few minutes, they finally arrived. David scouted the jeepney with his gaze, pleased that the jeepney’s top hasn’t been occupied yet.
“Ay dakayu dayta?” They heard the Jeepney driver speak, Confirming in Ilocano if they were the ones who reserved the ride.
“Wen,” David affirmed.
With this the driver began to signal the other passenger, declaring in their tongue the jeepneys departure. They began exciting for the jeepney, placing first their items of luggage at the top.
“Aren’t you riding with us up there?” David asked Lauren. The lady shook her head in aversion.
“No, no!” She laughed, “Four hours exposed to the scorching sun? I’d rather not. There’s an extra seat inside the jeep so I think I’ll join the other passengers there.” She replied, smiling sweetly as she made her way inside the vehicle.
