I walked to the barn on a bright Saturday morning. In May. School was coming to a close. Soon summer would be here. The weather man said it was to be warm. Which I was glad for.
I went and grapped a halter. I had a new clients horse. That was named Bunny. Her owner said she was having trouble doing barrels and wanted me to work with her. She was also getting scared. Nobody wanted a horse scared at a rodeo somebody could get hurt. The owner also said that she was doing great at barrels then got hurt and put on rest. Once she was all the way better she eased her in and wasn't getting any where.
I went to her stall. The little buckskin was eager for me to let her out. I haltered her and saddled her up. I lounged her in my round pen for a bit. I led her in to my big arena that barrels were set up. I got up on her. She sat still waiting for my cues. I took her around at a walk at first. Then we started getting faster. She seemed to be doing good. I put a tarp down so that we could try to get her bomb proof and not scare. She spoked trying to get around it. I made her go through it slowly. When she was in the middle of it a truck started coming up the drive. She spoked a bit but then it happened.
Hunters truck back fired. Everything happened in slow motion. She reared up. I was caught off guard. I fell out of the saddle but my foot was caught in the stirup. She took off running dragging me around. "Whoa Bunny." I yelled. My foot popped out. Leaving me on the ground. Hunter came running towards me.
"Holly? Are you ok?" I nodded my head. And that hurt like a son of a gun. I got up slowly and with the help of Hunter. "Come on in taking you to the doctor."
"No. I got to get back on her to show her it is ok."
"No Holly! Your bleeding!" He said pointing at my head. I wipped my fingers over my head. Took my finger away and saw red.
"I don't care if I don't she will get worse."
"No Holly." I ignored him and walked towards Bunny.
"It's ok Bunny. Shhh. Its alright." I said in a calm voice. I grabbed her reins and led her around hoping to calm her down. Hunter paced back and forth. "I'm fine Hunter. After I finish if you still want to take me to the doctor you can." He looked pissed off. He stomped to his truck.
After I felt like she was calm I got back on. After an hour she was finally going over the tarp just fine. I pet her and gave her treats. I led her back in the stable. I brushed her off after taking the saddle off. I let her in the stall. I grabbed a wash cloth and held it to the area that was bleeding.
Hunter had pulled the truck around and was waiting for me. I hopped in and he took off. Nobody said anything. We sat in uncomfortable silents. "Look I had to finish you can't leave on a bad note." I said. His jaw was clenched tightly and he wasn't saying anything. We got to the doctors. He signed me in. We only had to wait a couple minutes before they were calling us in.
"Hello I'm doctor Scott."
"Hi I'm Holly Potts."
"It looks here you've been here a couple times."
"Yep. Won't be my last either." The doctor laughed while Hunter turned red. What was his problem?
"Well let's see the wound." I took the cloth off and he looked at it. "Your going to need stiches."
"Alright." He went to find a nurse to help. I turned to Hunter. "Are you ok?"
"No I'm not ok!" He snapped.
"I'm sorry your mad but I had to do it. It's my job." He opened his mouth but the doctor came back in.
"We can talk later."
