Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials (Fan Fiction) Newt X Casey

Chapter 12

Newt POV 

     I run down off of the roof of the destroyed building, with Casey following close behind. We quickly make it back to the rest of the group, to see Winston laying on the ground, breathing harshly. A moment later, Thomas and Teresa join us. "What happened?" Thomas asks, staring down at Winston. "I don't know. Winston was just sleeping, then all of the sudden he grabbed his gun and tried to shoot us." Minho answered. "Don't let me become one of them. Please." Winston says quietly. I slowly step towards him, then crouch down. The gun lay beside him, so I reach forward and pick it up. "Newt." Thomas says softly behind me. I know that I would never be able to kill my friend, but I can help him. 

     I give the gun to Winston, and he shakily wraps his hands around it. "Thank you." He whispers. "Goodbye Winston." I say quietly. I stand up, then back away from him. Gradually, we all leave the abandoned building, and make our way across the sand dunes once more. It isn't long before we hear the distance bang of a gun firing a bullet.

Casey POV 

     The day has consisted of wandering across many sand dunes. Everyone is very quiet, since Winston died. I guess everyone is in their own thoughts. I am mainly thinking of what is going to happen when we reach the mountains. Will there be people there, or would it all be for nothing?

     It is night, and we finally made it through the desert, and into a flat landscape with nothing but rock in all directions. We all lay on the ground, all close together, and I find myself curled up with Newt yet again. 

     I can't really sleep, so I have just been dozing, until I hear a weird booming sound. I slowly lift my head, and notice Thomas is awake too. We make eye contact, and he looks just as confused as I do. There is then a bright flash behind me. I look back, and see a bolt of lightning flash through the sky. A lightning storm is approaching.
