Newt POV

I stare off into the distance, watching the sky fade to dark, and the rolling dunes of sand turn to silhouettes. I lean against the broken stone of what once used to be a part of the mall. Now it is just a pile of stone and twisted metal.

I look around at everyone else, they all seem relatively peaceful. My gaze then stops on Winston, who is breathing very quickly and shallowly. His skin is pale, and his eye sockets are dark. He is tense and looks to be in pain. My mind then flashes back to the glade, when Alby got infected, and how he looked a lot like this. "If only we have more of that blue liquid that cured Alby, then we would be able to cure Winston too."  I think to myself regretfully, even though I know there is nothing I can do.

I finally tear my gaze away from Winston, and look down at Casey, who is still sleeping beside me. She too looks tense, but not in a sick kind of way. She looks to be in pain, but also looks cold, since she is shivering. "It doesn't feel cold to me, but I didn't get shot and loose a lot of blood. She says that she took that bullet because it was apparently the right thing to do. But I think it goes deeper than that."  My mind flashes back to earlier, when we kissed. "Did she save me because she likes me so much that she would risk her life for me? She certainly doesn't seem afraid of death." I wonder about this for a while, then decide to try and get some sleep too.

I slowly lay down, careful not to wake her. I then hesitantly reach out my arms, and wrap them around her, pulling her closer to me. She slowly stops shivering, then lets out a faint sigh of relief, going into a deeper sleep. I too close my eyes, and lay there with Casey in my arms.

The sun shines brightly down on us. I look up to see a bright blue sky, with sand drifting through the air, being carried by the wind. By my sudden movement, Casey wakes up abruptly, looking around as if mildly confused as to where she is. She then looks up at me, realizes that I fell asleep with her, and turns slightly red in the face. "Good morning." I say to her, smiling a little. She smiles back. "Good morning." She responds, with a shy expression covering her face.

The rest of the group wakes up gradually, one after another, and we finally all decide to keep moving. Leaving the abandoned mall behind us, as we make our journey towards the mountains.
