OStar had spent a good ten minutes pacing in her room, thinking multiple things over and over.
Why was her creation so weak? Destruction so strong?
Was she truly just evil deep down but had forgotten it all?
So many questions, so few answers.
She hated it. She wanted to talk to someone, one of her friends. But she was scared, she didn't want them to think of her as evil and fear her.
Lucerne's words started to come back.
"Would remembering change you?"
It echoed in OStar's head for a long moment, making her stop.
Maybe it would. Maybe remembering would cause her to destroy.
Suddenly getting her memory back wasn't as appealing as it once was.
Perhaps she could live like Estella and start a new life. If her past was bad, maybe this time she could make it good.
But still she wanted to go back home. She wanted at least to see where she came from, even if only for a second.
OStar sighed and decided to take a nap, a normal nap, not a meet-up with Pargenti. She wanted silence and to have all her worry disappear.
She climbed into bed and curled up tightly, covering her face with her paws.
"No dreams, just sleep. No dreams."
It took OStar nearly an hour before she finally started to doze off into sleep, begging for a peaceful nap.She put her paws over her ears. There were sounds of an argument in the other room. She'd never heard them argue this much before. There were disagreements from time to time, but nothing was ever this bad for the entire nine years she had lived here.
What were they talking about? She didn't care, she didn't want to hear it.
Eventually the front door slammed, signaling that one of them had left.
Before long, her brother came into her room. "Sorry about that... We just had a little talk..." he said. OStar didn't look at him. "...About what?" she asked, lowering her paws from her ears.
"Don't worry about it," he answered, patting her head.
She frowned, but didn't care, things will be fine later. It was a simple argument.
OStar stared at the ground, a crack, the floor was cracked. Black smoke seemed to rise from it, but not fire smoke, smoke like her destruction magic. She looked at her paws, but they were normal, she wasn't using her magic.
"What the...?" OStar looked at her brother, but he was gone, in fact, she wasn't even inside anymore. She was outside, cracks growing everywhere, even in the sky.
She had to get out of here.
The locket. OStar knew all portal keeper items can open random portals, taking one to a safe new universe. This was usually for travelers.
Fumbling with the locket she managed to open it using the second hidden button, creating a randomized safe portal. Quickly she jumped through it, but slammed face first into a wall.
OStar yelped and fell back, pawing at her sore nose.
"Careful!" a startled voice she'd never heard before spoke. "You're still dizzy from the magic, just rest for a few moments," he suggested, the sounds of writing catching her ears.
She obeyed and lay on her side, taking deep breaths as the blurry world spun around her.
"Everything okay over there?" another gruff voice asked from a distance.
"She's very dizzy, you were right about that," the first one replied.
What were they talking about? They were both males, that was certain, but none she had ever heard before.
OStar felt an overpowering urge to leave, she didn't want to be here anymore. It wasn't dangerous and they didn't try and hurt her intentionally, she just didn't like this place. She wanted to leave.
Grass was now under her paws, a shallow forest ahead of her.
"Go," the gruff voice said from just behind her, but she didn't look back. Her eyes were on freedom, the dizziness long gone.
"I can tell you don't like it here, so go."
OStar didn't wait for him to offer twice, she bolted off and flapped into the sky, rising higher and higher. Well over the trees and nature below.
Only then did she look back at the house, but the man had already gone inside.
Freedom.
Where should she go now? Did she have a home? She couldn't remember, maybe she didn't.
Opening another random portal, OStar left the universe.
"Lost, are you?" a lady asked, grabbing her attention.
She was short and chubby with curly brown hair, but her face was welcoming and friendly.
"Name's Hope, that's what the people here call me. I've certainly never seen a face like yours around here. Are you new?"
OStar slowly nodded.
"Ah, I see, come with me, I know what to do with ya," she chuckled and walked off, expecting OStar to follow.
And she did. This lady seemed kind. OStar didn't have the odd uneasy feeling she'd gotten in the other house.
Before long they were in a small town, peaceful and quiet and full of nature. One could even call it a village.
Hope took OStar to her home and got something quick for her to eat.
"Where'd you come from? Have a name?" she asked, handing OStar a blueberry muffin.
"Um, just traveling, name's OStar,"
"Well it's nice to meet ya, OStar," the lady smiled.
OStar couldn't help but smile back. She could live here, make this her home. She was safe here, around what seemed to be friendly people.
Four years have passed since then, and everything's changed.
"What is this place? Why am I here?" she asked herself as she looked out the window.
She heard voices from the other room, but only partially paid attention.
"There must be something you can do! You don't just make portal gems; I've seen your house! You have all kinds of strange things!"
"They are decorations!" a slithery voice hissed back, "Not medicine for memory loss!"
"Then what's wrong with her?? She's always been forgetful, but it seems to have gotten so much worse over the years,"
What was that lady's name again? Slope? How long has she been here? It felt like she just got here last night.
"I'm just a portal keeper, not a doctor. Maybe you should get rid of her, she doesn't belong here."
"Get rid of her?" the lady sounded offended that he would ever suggest that.
"Send her to OCTown. It's safe there and people might be able to help her,"
"But..."
"You can go with her if you really want to,"
There was silence. Slope spoke some more but it was too quiet for OStar to hear.
"Then you know what to do," the other voice spoke.
After a few moments OStar looked back to see the door open. The short chubby lady stood there, behind her was nothing more than a dark red shadow that moved away. Whoever she had been speaking with was certainly not human.
OStar gave the lady a blank and confused look as she talked, saying something about a town and to come back to visit sometime. The lady had even started crying and hugged her.
Honestly, it was awkward. She hardly knew this lady, why was she acting like she'd known OStar for years?
A portal gem was tossed onto the ground, shattering and opening up an OCTown portal.
"Head to town, ask for help from anyone. Find a way to stop your memory loss," she choked out. OStar stared for a moment, then nodded and walked through the portal. It closed behind her as she stepped into a golden yellow field with tall yellow grass. The sun was just setting, turning the sky into waves of color that will eventually go black.
It was peaceful, maybe she should take a nap. Why was she here?
Nap it is then.
OStar yawned and curled up, having no idea that everything would be gone by the time she woke up."OStar?" Charlotte asked, nudging the cat. OStar groaned and slowly drifted out of her dreams, eyes flickering open. "Huh...?" she mumbled, looking over.
Charlotte blinked back, no longer looking angry like before.
"Charlotte??" OStar quickly sat up, startled and hoping she hadn't shown up to yell at her.
"Everything okay?" Charlotte asked, scooting back from the bed she was kneeling beside.
"Y-Yeah everything's fine," OStar stammered, waiting to be scolded.
Charlotte sighed, "Sorry for snapping earlier, I was just a bit startled you were in my room," she apologized.
OStar looked at her with surprise, unsure why she was apologizing when the cat was the one who was snooping in the first place.
"It's fine, I shouldn't have been snooping around in your room without your knowledge," she mewed, trying to not let Charlotte take all the blame. She had every right to snap at OStar for being nosey.
The teen frowned and looked away, something seemingly on her mind.
Now it was OStar's turn.
"Everything okay?" she asked her.
"Huh? Okay? Yeah, why?" Charlotte answered, not expecting her own words to be used back at her.
"Did I say something wrong?" OStar asked.
"No, I was just... a little lost in thought. I don't want people going through my room, but I also don't want them thinking I am hiding something bad. Do you think I'm hiding something bad?"
"I don't think papers are bad..."
OStar shook her head. "No, I don't think that..."
Charlotte looked skeptical, as if she did not believe her.
"Not everything needs to be shown or told. People can keep things to themselves if it doesn't hurt anyone else," OStar tried to explain, partially to herself with her fears of her past.
"I guess," the teen sighed before getting up. "Sorry for bothering you,"
"It's okay," OStar replied as her friend left.
She sat there, feeling like she should have done more. It still seemed Charlotte was blaming herself for what happened when it wasn't at all her fault. OStar sighed, too tired to bother. Charlotte would be fine. For now, OStar wanted to focus on her dreams.
It didn't take a mastermind to understand what the dreams were. They were memories. She was already remembering things, but there were still many questions.
OStar assumed she started losing her memory years ago, but it finally reached its limit about a week ago with a complete wiping of everything. A part of her hoped that was the end of it, no more memory loss. She didn't want to forget Charlotte and Afina and all her new friends. So far it didn't seem that way. The only things she seemed to forget were the dreams, and dreams were always easy to forget by most people. In fact, parts of her dream were already fizzing away back into the darkness. OStar tried so hard to grasp those parts and keep them. She needed all the puzzle pieces, she couldn't afford to lose any.
Unfortunately, she couldn't manage to grab some of those memories, the name of the short lady being one of them.
OStar remembered what she looked like though, as well as the sound of the odd snake-like voice of her companion. She remembered being dizzy, escaping that odd place, cracks in the sky and the argument in another room. There were holes in the events, conversations had gaps and things seemed blurred out, but now she didn't care. This was memory, and so far, none of it seemed to reflect her being cruel or evil. No killing, no crazy laughter.
Maybe the past wasn't bad in the sense that possibly OStar killed someone, but bad as in being traumatic. Maybe her family was killed, or her hometown was attacked. She already could assume that her life hadn't been the best thing ever, if it had been, she wouldn't be sitting here with hardly any memory.
Headache.
Too much thinking had started giving OStar a headache. "Time for a break... And not a nap,"
She shook her head. Big mistake, that just made her head hurt more. Wincing, she hopped off her bed and left the room, deciding the best thing to do now was get a cold drink of water. She made her way down the halls and over to the kitchen, where OStar got herself a special shaped cup for paws and went to the fridge, filling it up with ice and the much-needed water.
Lapping water from a bowl didn't feel right, neither was being petted. She didn't understand why Afina was okay with it, but then again, she was more cat than everyone else.
OStar sat and drank from the cup, practically chugging the thing. She was done after a few seconds and got a little more. She felt a bit better after that.
Once she had put the cup away, the sound of the front door opening caught her attention.
"Someone's home," OStar thought as she quickly padded out of the kitchen to the front door.
It was Avaro and Lucerne, with Mystic.
