KAGEYAMA's POVWhat did Tsukishima mean about having my heart broken?
Until now, I still don't understand.
I turned to Kumi who walked beside me while she hummed a tune. How can a girl like her break someone's heart? I thought to myself. I sighed, stopping infront of certain diner.
Tsukishima said this was her favorite foodplace, I shrugged, hearing happy gasps from the girl beside me.
"You know this place?!" She beamed. "T-this is my favorite!"
"I...just happen to choose this randomly." I replied, grabbing her hand as we entered the diner. We settled in a table for two, scanning through the menu of different meals. The waitress took our order; I ordered pork curry with egg on top while she had Asahiwaka Ramen.
"What's her favorite food?" I asked.
"Huh? Is that necessary?" asked Tsukishima, annoyed. "She likes everything, but if there's one thing, it's Asahikawa Ramen from her favorite diner."
"Do you come here often too, Kageyama?" She asked.
"Yeah," I lied.
"I haven't been in here in 2 years! Ever since I started training more seriously for the internationals, my parents and coaches restricted me from eating heavy," she shared.
"Don't you think you should eat more? For your muscles?" I replied.
"That's what I thought so too. Arghhhh, I regret it. In the end I wasn't even able to play!"
I watch her fake a cry, and I think it was...cute. Come to think of it, it's the first time to hear her talking about not playing in the internationals. "Why weren't you able to play?" I asked cautiously, hoping for an answer.
She didn't reply for a minute, her smile turning into a frown.
"You don't have to answer," I said.
"It's fine," she smile. A fake one. "Actually, I just stopped. I didn't want to anymore."
She's lying. It's definitely not the reason. I decided not to force her into telling me and just changed the topic. "Umm, the Miya brothers, you played with them right?" She nodded. "How were they like, as a teammate?" Half of the pictures in her room consisted of her and some popular volleyball stars of the country, it gave me a good idea to start a topic especially since it's about volleyball.
"Let's see," she place her chopsticks down, "Tsumu was probably the best setter I've ever played with, his tosses were so easy to hit that it gives me time to think where to actually aim. There was never a spike I missed with his tosses. You think you can do that too, Kageyama-kun?"
I silently choked on my food, quickly grabbing a glass of water and chugged it down. "No...not yet." A setter that creates a toss that's actually easy to hit for any spiker...In all honesty, I'm still far from that level.
"Yet," she winked. "Anyway, Samu may look like an unmotivated prick, but he's got great power as well. He just doesn't stand out as much as his twin..."
Meeting expert players and travelling around the world because of volleyball has been a dream for mostly every volleyball player. I thought to myself. She did all those; stood on Ushijimas level since at the age of 7; played in the nationals and was scouted by the national team...to think that she just suddenly quit. There has got to be a bigger reason, a reason that's worth quitting.
If that were me, whatever the reason I'd never quit. I sighed, finishing up my meal. We continued talking about random things for the next few minutes, until it was an awkward silence once again.
"You can't train us this afternoon?" I asked.
"Can't, sorry," she shook head. "I have to be somewhere in 2pm."
"Where?"
"Um...my parents' business meeting?" She replied unsurely.
She's obviously lying again. I sighed, nodding in understanding.
"Hey Kageyama," I turned to her, "are you ready for the exam?"
I rubbed my nape nervously, "I think so."
"Do you need help?"
If it means seeing her more often — "Yes."
"The exam's next week, when and where do you want to study?"
"Every after club. If that's okay with you," I replied.
"Yeah, it's fine. Where—"
"At my house?"
She nodded, finishing up her bowl of ramen. "So starting Monday?" I nodded in reply, calling for the waitress to check our bill. We both took out or wallets at the same time, turning to each other.
"I'll pay for the both of us." I said sternly.
"It's fine, we can split—"
"My treat, I wanted this date."
She shut her mouth, flushing red and so did I when I realized what I said. "Seriously," I regained my posture, "I'll pay." She nodded and went back to her cheery mood as she smiled at me with a 'thank you'. Once I finished paying the bill, I checked the time to see we have 30 minutes left.
"Shall we go back now?" she asked.
"It's still early," I replied with a straight face.
Suddenly she grabbed my hand and pulled me out of the diner as I let her lead me to where she was heading. She stopped infront of a small ice cream stall; I turned to look at her eyes shimmering with admiration as she viewed each flavors.
"A minute after she exits the diner, she'll eventually rush to her favorite ice cream stall." Tsukishima said boredly. "Just let her be, she hasn't eaten those in so long."
This must be what Tsukishima was talking about. The smile on her face was priceless that it suddenly made me soft. I took out my wallet, thinking of paying for her, but her hand stopped me.
"Not this time, Tobio."
I widened my eyes as my lips parted. A blush crept up in my cheeks hearing her voice saying my first name.
"A-ah, g-gomen." She stammered, facepalming herself as she mumbled, "Shouldn't have said that."
"It's fine," I said calmly, "I like it actually hearing it from you, Aya."
She looked up and smirked, lightly punching my arm. "Idiot." She then turned back to the stall and paid for the ice cream, also handing me one. "Try it! It's blue!"
"So what if it's blue?" I tilted my head.
"My favorite color. It's bubblegum flavored by the way, try it!"
"I'm not supposed to be eating much before practice," I replied flatly.
"Keishin won't know," she pouted.
"I can't."
"Killjoy." She crossed her arms as I finally sighed in defeat, taking the cone from her hand. A big smile was painted across her face, watching me taking a taste of the icy blue ice cream.
She looks so happy. I thought licking the desert. Seconds later, I dug my mouth in the ice cream, actually loving it. "It's delicous."
"Right?" She smiled. "Let's head back before Keishin beats the crap out of us."
I nodded, thanking her for the ice cream. Suddenly, I tensed up as she locked her free arm around my arm, leaning her head against my biceps.
I smiled, looking down on her as I listened to her voice. I then interwined my hand in hers, perfectly fit for one another's as we head back to the gym.
