𝐍𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐚 𝐬𝐚𝐭 behind the counter of the gas station still upset with herself that she made Alejandro think she didn't want his number. He was praying that the boy would still come in and get his usual two bags of sour patch kids. She tapped her fingers on the counter of the register as she watched the clock across from her tick.
All that could be heard was the faint sound of her playlist being played and the sound of the slushie machines ever so often clicking.
Alejandro was driving anywhere that he could possibly go to get out of his house. His home life seemed to be getting worse by the second. His mom would hit him hard, and even throw stuff at him.
All Alejandro wanted to do was find an escape so when he didn't have school he would go driving at night when his mom would return. She never hit Emilio so he never worried about his little brother being hurt.
Alejandro took a deep breath in as music played from the speakers of his car, he had nowhere to go since no stores were open 24 hours because of covid. His only option was Mobil, where Nailea worked.
He didn't want to go there, but he also didn't want to go home because he knew his mom would still be awake. It was only 11 o'clock and she got home at 10:55. He sighed as he knew it was the only place he could pass time.
Alejandro saw the sign of the gas station lit up brightly, he almost felt nervous as he pulled into the almost empty parking lot. Alejandro has been rejected before, and he could always have a normal conversation with the girl that rejected him. But Nailea, she was different to him.
Nailea sat inside of the gas station messing with the candy boxes that sat on the counter in front of her, that was until she heard the ding of the door. She looked up and saw Alejandro. "Hi welcome to Mobil." She smiled, it was her job to say this no matter who walked in. Alejandro only nodded his head in response to her and walked to the famous candy aisle where he had spent his past Saturday nights.
He had his hands in his pockets as he looked at the candy. He didn't know why he bothered looking at the other candies anymore. He just liked the way how bright all the packages were, and how they all had different colors to try and make them pop. The boy grabbed his two bags of Sour Patch Kids and walked to the register, the only part he was dreading.
Nailea did feel bad about not answering him, she would have happily given the Dominican boy her number but she froze in fear like in the movies. Alejandro set his two bags of candy down as he dug in his pocket for a five.
He already knew the price of it since he comes here so often and gets the same thing. Before Nailea could even say something about the price Alejandro handed her the five dollar bill. She took it and popped open the register handing him his change.
He took the bags quietly and turned to walk out. Nailea knew the boy was quiet because of their interaction last Saturday. She wanted the boy's number badly, and she felt he would soon stop coming into the gas station because of the tensions. She wanted to see his face, and his smile.
Before Alejandro could leave Nailea spoke up, "Could I have your number Ale." Alejandro turned around at the girl's words. He couldn't help but smile as he nodded his head.
