Everything was perfect and world seemed for much brighter for Ross. Nothing could ever a mount to his feelings of happiness. There was a permanent smile on his face, he was a natural cheerful guy. And he owned all to his bright beautiful girlfriend Laura.Man if you could see the smile and energy of him, the day she said 'yes' after he had set up a romantic picnic in the park with a heart shaped rose petals surrounding them, along with some candles. You wouldn't believe it, he spun her around in circles tightly holding her up until they tumbled onto the dewy itchy grass.
He waited at her door anxiously, rubbing his sweaty, clammy hands against his tight black jeans before he rang the doorbell. The moment the door swung open, there stood the most precious and beautiful girl he had ever seen. He took in a breath trying to process that the jewel in front of him was actually going on a date with him and that it was real, not just a beautiful dream that would soon end.
The date was perfect, he had never felt so much butterflies in his stomach before and he had never laughed or smiled so much that it felt like his face would stay like that forever. But if she was by his side forever, he wouldn't mind looking like an idiot for smiling so big every time.
It had been a lovely 18 months of constant dates, laughs, feelings of happiness, of love, and pure bliss for Ross. He had never felt so lucky in his entire life than those moment he spent with Laura, he sure that he was always there for her and remained her how much she matter to him.
He had known the meaning of love, true love in fact. He knew that there was no place on earth he would rather be than standing right next Laura, always. Nothing could ever go wrong with his feelings of happiness and absolute love for laura.
Until one dreadful night...
Ross and Laura had been invited to a party, where the booze and drugs were free and the sex came in pairs. But it wasn't the threesome sex session that started the horrible nightmare, it was Ross's anger and jealously that brought them to the dead end.
Frustrated by the constant hungered stares that Laura got from drunken guys and her constant laughing at some preppy frat boy at the party, Ross blamed it on the sluty above-knee red dress that she wore and her use of make-up that brought the guys attention to her. He balled his hands into fist and loudly growled that frat boy urging him to get from his girlfriend.
Dragging her away from the party as she screamed in pain because of his forcible hold on her arm, He pushed her into the car driving them home. She sat in silence with a red mark on cheek, tears slowly dripping down her face in fear of what he might do if she spoke up again.
But that wasn't all...
Weeks later she had gone to mall and her phone died as she was middle shopping. He called her non-stop over the next 30 mins and with no response to his calls or text, he drove to her house in fury. He bounced his leg up and down for three hours sitting on her front porch waiting for her to comeback. When she did arrived the scowl on his face was visible from blocks away, she stepped out from Luke's all happy but she saw him sitting there instant fear ran through her fear as she remember the slap to her cheek. Step by step, she slowly approached him shaking and stuttering as his face was bloody red and he gritted out a greeting.
Inside was no better. He slapped her twice, this time leaving on mark on both her cheeks and giving one hard hair pull. He was aggressive and unemotional towards her, his words felt like venom against her skin as he spit out one insult after the other. Her constants cries of pain and tears of disappointment made no impact on him, it only made him grow furious.
This was the last straw that end it all...
It was 7'clock at night, she had been sleeping all day trying to think of reason behind his anger as she traced her new purple bruises across her skin. She was unhappy, sad, and most of disappointed. Disappointed, in the actions of boyfriend, he had once vowed to never hurt or make her cry but lately that all she did. She defended him and stuck up for him and he was hurting her.
He barged through the door, blood boiling, eyes darkened and breathing uneven as yelled out her name demanding to know her whereabouts. In fear and completely scared she stuttered out as a simply "here" in a small soft voice.
He didn't believe it and his fingernails dug into the palms of his hands, leaving a mark. She trying calming him down and wanted to reason with him but that when he punched her straight in the face knocking her to ground. She held her cheek in shock and fear; he wasn't the sweetheart she once knew and fell in love with.
He kicked in the stomach with the point of his black converse, repeatedly. She wailed out in pain begging him to stop but he didn't.
He picked her from the floor and punched her again and again, he yelled out in anger and screamed in her face telling her that she was cheating on him and that she was liar. She was too afraid to answer and only raised her hands to wipe the tears away, only to be met with his big hand smacked against her cheek.
Tired of situation once and for all, she grew the courage to speak up and tell him the only three words that made him stop.
"I hate you"
All it took were three words for him to stop adding more blood to drop from her face. He stumbled backwards looking at his bloody hands, the blood of one he loved the most, the one he vowed he would never hurt. He looked at her face, lips bruised and busted, eyes turning purple and her hands clutched around her stomach wincing in pain.
Everything had happened so fast that he couldn't understand what was happening.
"laura...laura...laura."He called out as his wrist were strapped with the cold metal and he was take away.
The silence consumed his thoughts as he constantly thought about happened. The dried blood on his knuckles told one story as the memories he had told another.
He heard the cries of his mother, the shouts from his father and the sobbing sounds of his beloved girlfriend as told the cruel story to the jury about the recent events.
Every tear and sniffle she let out as she avoided his gaze, broke his broke in pieces. The deep frown that was stuck on her lips and glossy look in her eyes, nearly killed him on the inside.
As the final pounding of gavel stated in the verdict, Ross felt the feeling of his body die out.
He felt the beating of his heart stop and the air in his lungs collapse.
"Sentenced to 15 years and restrained from ever seeing miss Laura Marano ever again."
That was his punishment for hurting one he loved and stills loves. He was reason behind her tears, he reason to the frown on her pink lips, the reason why she cried herself to sleep every night.
Tortured by her words, " I hate you" as constant reminder of what he had done.
Walking free after 25 years later, he sat in the park that brought him the best memories of life. The joyful sound of children laughing and the annoying jingle of an ice cream truck filled his mind.
A family only meters away from him, stuck out. There she was in goodness glory, looking as beautiful as he remember maybe even more. She talked to a child, wiping her nose.
A tall and muscular man enjoyed them, slowly snake one arm around her waist and kissed her lips. He carried the small girl in his arms and made her laugh.
It was in that moment that he realized one thing. He realized all it ever took was one mistake to ruin it all.
One mistake to ruin happiness, to Destroy love, to hurt the ones we loved the most.
And he forever had to live with his dreaded Mistake.
