The office was way more than half empty. Only the most dedicated or necessary employees were still at the office. Those that were there weren't exactly engaging in productive activities either. With the lack of work, Kelri's stomach grew especially restless. I'm going to start the new year right. Going to seriously track what I eat and bring it under control. She told herself that. As always her stomach's monstrous hunger was incapable of listening to reason. Kelri fought a valiant battle, but towards the end of the shift, her conviction wavered. She left her desk to search the break room for snacks to try and quell her hunger.
The breakroom was festooned with decorations calling forth the new year. Confetti littered the floor. Plates and Bowls bearing splatters of pizza sauce and smears of frosting piled out of the garbage. She peeked into the pizza boxes. Empty. The fridge door creaked as she opened and she stared with a blank expression. The bottom of the fridge had rows of heavy cream: a supply to go with the vast amount of coffee the office went through. There were a few unclaimed bagged lunches, but what caught Kelri's eye was the half of a tray filled with cake left over from earlier in the day.
She grunted with annoyance. No. Not cake. Well... Maybe just one slice. No. Too many calories. And it wouldn't be just one. Her stomach growled, urging her towards the cake. She groaned and shut the door of the fridge. The will to stop her hunger held by a thread. If resentment was a laser, her eyes would have bore a hole straight through the refrigerator.
"Oh hi Kelri! Happy new year!"
Kelri scratched at the back of her head trying to summon forth the desire for small talk. "Happy new years. What uhh - Getting more coffee?"
"Yep. Gotta make sure I stay awake to watch the ball drop." Maia walked passed her and poured the last of the pot of coffee into her mug. "Damn. need to make another one. Seems a waste so late in the day. It's not my wallet though." She laughed and started filling the pot from the faucet.
"Right." Kelri looked to the door waiting for a lull in the conversation so she could leave.
"Have any special plans?" Maia asked as she fetched a tin of coffee out from the high cupboard.
"For new years? No."
"Any resolutions?"
"Uhh... Weight loss." She leaned against a folding table, slowly sliding toward the door.
Maia set the coffee machine to brew. She looked back at Kelri, and traced Kelri's form slowly with her eyes. "I think you look great. Really great." She smiled.
"Uhh, thanks." Don't even start with that...
"No I mean it. I saw your new pictures online." Maia averted her gaze back to the dripping coffee machine to hide her grin.
Oh no. Of course she has. Kelri clenched and suppressed the urge to run. "Oh. I thought you just watched eating contests."
Maia chuckled nervously. "No. My interests are more than just that." Her face took on bright shade of red. Her smile persisted. "Your latest pictures you posted were... Incredible."
Oh god... Kelri lamented in her mind.
"I think - if I may be a bit bold - maybe too bold -"
"Just say it." Kelri demanded.
"Yes. Right. " Maia nervously fiddled at a button on her shirt. "I absolutely love how much weight the treatment you told me about has made you gain. I love how... fat you've gotten." Maia smirked and looked down at the ground, waiting for her response.
