My hands trembled slightly as I barely pressed my fingers on the keys of the grand piano, "Okay Tess, you can do this, you've been working on this for months, clearly it has to sound good." I grimaced slightly and began the to play the intro.
The sweat began to form on my fingers. Ugh, not helping. I felt like they would slip off the keys at any moment. The annoying 'bang' of a minor key filled my ears, I messed up on something so simple too. I continued playing as if it never happened, but I could still hear the ringing of the wrong key in my head.
Why was I so nervous? I usually am so calm when I play, and it's not a recital. I sighed and stopped playing, "I'll never be a good pianist or singer songwriter."
I got up banging my elbows on the keys so they left an awful, out of tune, screech. I grabbed my arm rubbing the red marks, "Idiot," I muttered.
Next thing I knew there was a loud knock on the door, "Hey hoe! Are we going out for lunch or what!?" A voice shouted.
I smirked, "Aye Avery!"
Avery is my best friend in the whole wild world. I met her in 2nd grade when I moved to Los Angeles. Previously I lived in a crappy apartment in Virginia. My dad had been offered a prestigious job in LA, it was the greatest opportunity to move for our family.
Avery is extremely sarcastic, but a great friend in general. She's captain of the Westshore Junior High Panthers, our female basketball team. She and I share same tastes in music, so I suppose that's another thing in common.
I sauntered over to the door, grabbing my bag sitting on the counter nearby the door. Quickly, I swung the door nearly hitting Avery in the nose. "Dammit Tess, you could've hit me!"
I grinned, "That's revenge for all the times you hit me with inanimate objects!"
She scoffed, "Yeah, yeah, whatever Williams now let's get going before Mr. Olson tells us to get the hell out."
I let out a light chuckle at her comment, leaving Avery to smirk widely. We left the school building and Avery pulled her phone out quickly, "There's an In N' Out, not far from here, two blocks, give or take."
"Sounds delightful." I said licking my lips. I wasn't a huge fan of fast food, but I can't resist some greasy fries.
As soon as we arrived, Avery swung open the door yelling, "Show me the money!" I burst out laughing, I fucking loved this girl. The restaurant went silent. She grinned nervously, "I'm only kidding, gosh you people take EVERYTHING seriously."
After that nervous chatter began, which then evolved to normal conversation. I looked at Avery, "Get me my usual, I'll find a table."
She smiled, "Kay boo."
I walked off, going through the restaurant looking for a table, not a surprise that this place would be full. I finally found a two person table near another table occupied by a couple dressed like they were trying to not look flashy and noticeable.
I took a seat staring at the wall, I heard the faint sound of 'Roar' by Katy Perry in the background. I scoffed, "Playing such an old pop song."
"Thought you liked Katy Perry, huh Tess?" I heard Avery say as she plopped down across from me carrying a tray of burgers.
I raised a brow, "I just said the song was old, not that I disliked the artist."
"Fair enough," Avery muffled with a mouth full of food.
There was a few minutes of silence between us as we ate our meals. Now that Avery had mentioned Katy, I realized how lyrically talented she was. She could enchant thousands of young children's hearts to follow their dreams. Not many artists have power like that.
"Speak of the Devil," Avery whispered sharply, "That's Katy Perry and her boyfriend... I think, over at that table."
I tilted my head to where Avery was looking, holy crap she wasn't kidding. I should've known that celebrities try to hide in public.
"Go say hi," Avery said, jabbing my arm.
"Are you insane!?" I nearly shouted.
That caused the people at the table next of us to look at us. The woman took her sunglasses off and smiled, "Are you wanting an autograph from me? I understand if you're shy."
"I... Uh..." I stammered as my face turned bright pink.
"Ah Katy Perry, Tessie here is a musician herself and she wants you to help her get into the music industry!" Avery chimed in.
I slapped her on the arm playfully, but more harshly than I thought "You idiot!" I scowled.
Katy nodded, "Oh a musician? How cool! What instrument do you play?"
"She's the best pianist the world has every seen Katy! Really, you should see her practice." Avery giggled.
I rolled my eyes, "I'm not THAT good."
The man looked over at Katy, Avery, and I, "Katy dear, we should get going."
Katy shook her head, "Not yet Thomas. My fans should get a picture first of course."
My eyes widened, Katy freaking Perry wanted a picture with Avery and I!? This is insane! Oh I feel like the luckiest girl alive!
Katy came over to our table. She smiled and pointed to Avery's phone on the table. Avery nodded and turned her phone on, "Get this Tess! We're gonna be instafamous!"
Katy and I burst out laughing. I nearly fell out of my chair onto Katy, but as if it was a reflex she gently pushed me back into place. I turned red, how could I be so clumsy around such a big star!?
"You alright dear?" Katy asked, a worried look painted on her face.
"Fine," I replied.
Avery swooped over to us, her iPhone ready to take a selfie. "1,2,3, INSTAFAMOUS!" She said snapping the photo. Oh dear God I hope looked good.
"Alright Katy go have fun on your date, Tess and I gotta go!" Avery smiled putting her phone away.
Katy smiled, wrapping her arms around Avery and I, "I hope to meet you guys again, you two are amazing!"
"Thank you Katy, for everything," I nodded.
"Yeah thanks Katy, you rock!" Avery grinned.
"Take care," I heard Katy quietly and sadly say as Avery grabbed my hand, pulling me towards the exit of the restaurant.
