Tess's POV

I must've fallen asleep because I awoke to the sound of twigs snapping and the sound of crackling. It took me a while to come to my senses but when I did I felt really hot. I looked around the area, when I fell asleep the area was... green. But now it's SMOKING!? I jumped in fear and grasped the trunk near me.

The fire wasn't too far away, but if I didn't move soon I'd burn to death. I bolted towards a hill that was towards the left of me. How long was I asleep? And how did this happen? I cringed as a tree suddenly fell in front of me. I gasped and frowned. Oh for fucks sake. I groaned and darted around the tree.

Obstacles, they're everywhere. I frowned slightly as I reached a river, or maybe a creek. But it was way too large to cross. This is the end, either I swim and probably drown or I burn to death.

My knees were shaking, and my heart was pounding insanely fast. I quietly thought about my options. I could try and go the opposite direction of the fire and that'd buy me some time to get help.

Without having any second thoughts, I ran down the bank as fast as I could. My shoes pounded into the mud, making dirty water fly everywhere. "Gross," I muttered.

I turned around after I had run for what I thought was long enough. The smoke was faint and in the distance, thank goodness.

I sighed in relief and looked around. Now what am I supposed to do now? I don't know where the hell I am or where anyone else is. What if they were all caught in the fire?

Images of Katy and my friends burning alive flooded through my head and I screamed. I quickly covered my mouth as they echo travelled through the large forest.

I suddenly heard bushes rustling near me. The hairs at the back of my neck stood up. "Who's there?" I asked timidly.

"Calm down it's just me." Lauren said as she pushed through the bushes. She had a really bloody cut by her collarbone and I raised a brow.

"What happened?" I asked as I slowly pointed at it.

"That's not the worst of our problems now, Tess. Have you seen yourself?"

"No I haven't, what's wrong?" I frowned. She grabbed my arm and turned me around so I was looking at my reflection in the water. There was a bruise right by my eye and it was really purple. "Oh my God." I shuddered.

"We can treat it once we get back to camp." Lauren smiled, trying to shine light into the situation.

"Yeah, but there's a fire..." I said quietly as she suddenly looked alarmed.

"A fire!? What do you mean!?" She asked.

I pointed towards the faint bits of smoke in the sky. "There's a fire down there. I was nearly burnt alive trying to escape it."

Lauren frowned as she studied the smoke, her eyes darted around carefully. "And where's the others?"

"I-I don't know." I said as my lip began to quiver. "Katy's gone off somewhere, Ann went after you, Avery's parents are looking for all three of you, and Avery disappeared all of a sudden."

I sighed and she knew I was in distress. She carefully wrapped her arm around me and pulled me into a one arm hug. "Don't worry Tess, at least we're together and that's better than nothing."

"Yeah, you're right. Now c'mon let's look for the others." I said as Lauren smiled and pulled me towards the woods.

Avery's POV

My eyes darted around the area from the tree I was sitting in. I'd climbed it just a few minutes ago.

I don't know where Tess is, but when I find her I'm gonna kill her, well not literally but metaphorically.

She ran off into the woods talking to herself like a madwoman and ditched me while I was trying to scare her. Then I saw smoke and chased after her to warn her.

But I couldn't get to her fast enough, so I took detour to the dense part of the woods and I'll stay in high ground until I find someone.

So far, I've had no luck. I can hear the sounds of fire crackling and trees falling from millions of feet away. I also heard a scream a few minutes ago. I could've sworn it was Lauren or Tess.

I heard movement coming from below. I quickly looked down. It was somebody else, a young woman was running this way and she looked out of breath. No wait, that's Katy!

"Katy!" I called down to her.

"Tess?" She asked exasperated as she turned around in circles.

"No, just Avery." I sighed and climbed down. I jumped to the ground from the lowest branch and looked at her with contentment. But even with her immense exercise, she looked really pale.

"There's a fire,"

"Yeah I know," I said quietly. "Do you reckon Tess got caught in it?" The second I asked that, I wish I didn't.

She tensed up and looked scared as heck. "Is she really!? We gotta find her now!" She said and started flailing around like a little kid.

"Katy," I said. "Calm down. She's too smart to get herself in a death threatening situation. But if she did, she'd find a way out."

"How would you know that!?" She snapped and I tensed up a bit.

"I-I'm her best friend, I know everything about her, she knows everything about me. I know how strong she is, but she's stronger when she's with the people she trusts the most." I smiled a little bit. "That'd be me, you, Lauren, Travis, and probably some others I don't even know."

She was silent for a second, she seemed to be taking all this information in. After a short period of time she finally gave her reaction, a nod.

"You're right. And we're going to find both Lauren and Tess." She said with pride.

"That's the spirit!" I chuckled.

"We'll find them, no matter what happens. C'mon Avery, we've got no time to lose." She grabbed my hand and nearly dragged me as she ran. For once she called me by my name, maybe I'm finally gaining her trust. That's really all I need, for this all to work out the way I want it to.
