I turned to Shannon, a funny look lay on her face. "Uh..." I said quietly. "I guess I went too far."

"Oh that's just Katy overreacting and running from her problems. Don't worry about it." She said fixing her gaze over to where Katy went. "I can talk to her if you want."

"Can you please do that Shannon? I'm kind of bad when it comes to words." I asked.

"Sure thing kiddo." Shannon smiled and got up. She pushed past David over to where Katy had ran off to and began calling her name.

"I'm sorry miss. I didn't mean to start World War III in your family." David said with a concerned look on his face.

"Whatever." I said looking down at my lap.

"Can I start over? Not as the awful jerk David before, because that's not really me. I just act like that because it's the only way I get girls to like me." He sighed as he stuffed his hands into his jean pockets.

"I guess I'm not really the girl who acts like a bitch either." I said quietly.

"So what's your name?" He asked sitting on the table.

"Tess." I replied as I looked at his dark brown almost black eyes.

"Well Miss Tess, I hope we get to be very good friends." He smiled and I blushed a little bit.

Katy's POV

I looked like a mess with the tears falling down my cheeks. How could I have thought so differently about Tess? I mean I know I just met her literally a week ago. But I'm legally her mother right? I'm confusing myself now.

I wiped the tears off my cheeks. "Katy? Are you in here Kate?" I heard Shannon call my name as she entered the bathroom.

"Oh Shannon," I said sobbing.

"Damn you've been crying a little too hard huh?" She said wrapping her arms around me into a hug.

"I don't understand it yet Shan. I'm not ready to be a mother. I made a mistake." I cried into her shoulder.

"No Kate. You can't give up on Tess yet. She's just fresh off of her parents dying. She's looking for a little piece of her past she can hold on to." Shannon said sympathetically.

Shannon was right and I knew it. I can't let Tess go yet. I'm the only thing she's got left.

"Yeah I guess I'm overreacting, I'll go apologize." I said letting her go. Shannon grabbed my hand and walked with me back to the main room.

I looked at her table noticing Tess and David talking and having a good time.

"And so I was at Avery's game at regionals. She was exhausted as heck. So I went down there and grabbed the water cooler and threw all of the remaining contents and said, 'Go out there and drag those hoes!' And then she scored all of the remaining points for the game. So yeah you could say she and I are partners in crime or something." Tess said while David laughed.

"Damn that's kind of like my buddy Simon. He's on the track team but he's actually kind of slow. Some say he was dropped on his head as a kid. So whenever he races I throw rocks at him so he runs faster. Works every time." He said laughing.

"Well seems you two have been hitting it off." Shannon smirked.

"In your dreams." Tess said rolling her pretty brown eyes.

"Well I got to get back to work. I'll see you later Tess. I'll text you when I'm done." David smiled and walked off.

"Shannon you're such an ass." Tess said giggling. Shannon playfully slapped her laughing as well.

"Uh Tess... I'm sorry I overreacted before I guess I'm just a little sensitive." I said quietly.

She looked at me, raising a brow, "I'm the one that should be apologizing Katy. I was the one who got you upset in the first place."

I shook my head, "It's alright. Now for real I'm starving let's eat now." Tess and Shannon smiled and we waited to order.
