Tess's POV

"Lauren," I said quietly as I tapped her shoulder. She turned to me, eyebrow raised. "This place is kind of familiar right?"

"I wouldn't know." Lauren laughed tensely. "I don't remember much about this place."

I sighed and continued walking next to her. We were a few good hundred meters or so away from the nearest sighting of smoke, so I wasn't too worried. But Lauren had been tense for a while, and that was worrying me.

She won't admit that she's anxious, but I told her that once we find Katy and the others, we'll be fine and we can get out of here.

I looked up again and suddenly stopped. I grabbed Lauren's arm. "Lauren," I said quietly. She turned and looked at me, kind of confused.

"We're one step closer to home."

Lauren smiled and ran off towards the clearing. I quickly followed her, grinning at the sound of her shouts and cheers. "Oh man," she gasped for air. "I never thought I'd see this place again, with the car not far away, we'll be home free!"

"Yeah, but we can't drive." I muttered, trying not to have Lauren overhear. Luckily, she didn't. I smiled to myself and lazily fell down onto a lawn chair. I noticed that Lauren was looking and her and her mother's tent suspiciously.

I watched her carefully as she walked around the camp, with a hollow looking face. "What's up Lauren?" I asked as I looked at her, slightly confused.

Lauren acknowledged that she heard me, but didn't say anything. She continued to stare at the tent, which got my suspicion level and it's highest peak.

"Where's my mom, Tess?" Lauren asked as her voice shook slightly.

"Lauren, I don't know I-"

"You were the last one to see her weren't you?" She turned around and stares at me, her eyes like icy daggers.

I frowned and stood up nervously. "I wouldn't know. Everyone left me! Ann went after you after you stormed off."

"If she followed me, I would've seen her!" She said as she cleaned her fists. I looked at her with the most fear I've had in a while. "I'll be damned Williams, you killed her!"

She picked a large stick up and threw it at me but I quickly dodged it. "Have you hit your head Payton!? Or are you hard of hearing?" I taunted.

"I wouldn't kill anyone! You know me, right?" I asked, staring into her cold dark eyes. "Listen to me Lauren, I'm just as anxious and scared as you, but you need to calm down."

"You don't understand!" She said shaking. "My m-mom's gone."

"And so are my parents..." I said quietly. She looked at me, now realizing what she had said. "Listen, we don't know if Ann's gone, but we can only hope for the best."

That's when I suddenly heard rustling in the bushes. Lauren jumped in fear and started stepping back. I looked at the bushes, kind of confused and bit my lip.

"Who's there!?" Lauren asked as she ran towards the bushes and shook them weirdly. Yeah, she's hit her head, who shakes bushes anyway!?

"Oh shut your trap Laur, what did you think I was, a bear?" Avery grumbled as she climbed out of the bushes.

"Avery," I whispered as I watched Lauren suddenly turn red while Avery burst out laughing. I looked back at the bushes and noticed that someone else was with her, Katy. Oh thank God she's alive.

We made eye contact, and she grinned broadly. I wanted to run up and hug her, but Avery suddenly walked over to me and shoved me against a tree. "What the hell Williams? Why would you leave me all alone?" She snarled.

"Me?" I asked in defense. "You were the one to left me to my own devices!"

"I only wanted to poke some fun, but then you ran off and ditched me!"

"I had no idea where you were I-" I suddenly felt her hands wrap around my waist and into a hug.

"Fucking coward," she whispered. "Don't leave me again."

"I won't," I said quietly. She pulled away and looked towards Lauren and Katy, who were watching us. "So, how did you two find each other?"

"We were both looking for you." Katy said quietly. "And we decided to team up, we didn't have much options because of the fire."

Oh yeah, the fire. I had completely forgotten. I looked over to where Lauren and I came from, there was smoke. "Speaking of which, it's heading this way."

Katy cursed under her breath and ran towards Avery and I. "Lauren, Avery, and Tess, we have to get out of here. I'll drive you guys home."

Lauren sharply snapped her head towards us. "We can't leave my mom and Avery's parents! Are you blind?" She walked towards us, muttering something under her breath.

But then, something snapped above her and I watched the fear and sadness fill her what was angry eyes as a huge tree branch came crashing towards her.

Never in my life, could I scream anymore louder.
