Knock.
Knock.
Knock.

"Adalyn, are you awake?" Dad shouted while knocking on my door. "Who am I kidding? You're probably still asleep."

I was lost in my dreams.

"Wake up sleepy head!" He chuckled, going inside and turning on the light switch.

Gradually, I unlocked my eyes as the sun shined recklessly on me.

"It's too early for this dad." I dozed, shutting my eyes again. "Can't a girl get some sleep around here?"

"Get up, you sleepy head. Something is waiting for you downstairs."

My full attention was back on him. "What's waiting for me?"

He chuckled again. "Get ready and see for yourself."

"Uh, alright," I grumbled. "I'll be down in one hour."

"Adalyn." His tone was sharper this time.

"Fine. Ten minutes."

Speeding the process, I quickly brushed my teeth and put on a dress that aunt Amelia had made for me. She told me to only wear it on special occasions. And we'll, today seemed like the perfect day to show it off.

The dress was gorgeous. She really outdid herself. It was a lovely sky blue color with flower lace down the waist.

I felt like Cinderella.

There wasn't any sign of dad—or anyone for that matter—the moment I walked down to the living room. I found it off given how insistent he'd been earlier this morning. He practically dragged me out of bed.

The emptiness encircling me made it seem as if I were in a horror film.

"Is this the part where a chair falls on the floor like in those paranormal films?" I rolled my eyes.

"Great."

Passing through the living room, my eyes caught a bright light coming from the kitchen. The door was probably left open, making the atmosphere appear more ominous than it already was.

Reaching the door, in an attempt to close it, there was a large assembly of people out in the backyard.

I went to see what'd been going on.

"Surprise!" Everyone yelled out the moment I went walked out the door. "Happy Birthday, Adalyn!"

Turns out that my dad had been planning a surprise birthday party for me all this time.

A party that came to pass early in the morning too.

I do have to say, I did not foresee this.

I never cared much about celebrating my birthday because it was like any other day for me. Though, that day became an exception. Seeing the happy look on my dad's face meant the world to me. He'd been insisting on planning one for me but I never came to terms with it. Nonetheless, he didn't ask for my permission this time and I was more than okay with that.

"Love that dress." Aunt Amelia winked at me. "Who could've created such a masterpiece, I do wonder."

"I know, right?" I said, admiring the beautiful flower laces. "Whoever made this sure is talented."
