"Are you okay?" Kongpob asks the man. It's not the smartest question given the situation. Of course, the man isn't okay. He has a stab wound and is bleeding out on the street.Kongpob takes off his jacket and presses it against the man's open wound to try stopping the bleeding, but the blood seeps through the jacket quickly. It isn't likely that the man will survive this. Kongpob already called for help, but he doubts they'll make it in time.
"Look," the man tries to speak. His voice is weak.
Kongpob is confused.
The man's bloodstained thumb caresses Kongpob's wrist, where his crescent soulmark is glowing. The man, then, turns his own wrist to show his round mark, which is glowing like a faint sun.
Kongpob is left gaping. This can't be happening.
"I'm Arthit," the bleeding man croaks.
"Kongpob."
"It's nice to meet you."
Is it? Kongpob wonders. They've only met because Kongpob saw Arthit getting stabbed after a robbery. Who knows if they would've met if that didn't happen?
Kongpob pulls Arthit into his arms, wishing he could do more to help him, save him somehow, but as Arthit's breathing becomes weaker, Kongpob realizes just how unfair fate is to them.
"It's nice to meet you too," Kongpob whispers, trying his best to stifle his cry. He watches how his soulmate closes his eyes, how their marks stop glowing. He doesn't understand how the world could show him his soulmate and take him back instantly, how it could make them meet during his last moments. They aren't even given a taste of what could've been.
This isn't how it's supposed to happen. They're supposed to meet their soulmate and take the time to know each other. They're supposed to go on coffee dates or movie dates, spend time at each other's apartments, and sleep facing each other. They're supposed to fall in love. And if everything goes well, they'll marry and spend the rest of their lives together.
But like the sun and the moon in the sky, Kongpob and Arthit only get to meet each other during this eclipse of their paths. Badly timed, short, and rare.
It isn't fair.
Suddenly, Kongpob gets shoved by a uniformed man. He didn't hear the ambulance coming.
"Family?" One of the paramedics asks him.
At that moment, it dawns on Kongpob that he is no one to the man being carried to the stretcher right now. All he knows is his name.
And that they are soulmates.
But does him being his soulmate matter anymore?
Kongpob shakes his head.
The paramedic leaves him and helps carry Arthit into the ambulance. The vehicle closes and hurries away, leaving Kongpob in the middle of the street, surrounded by a small crowd of people curious about the commotion.
It's noisy with all the talking and the ambulance's siren, but Kongpob, he hears nothing at that moment.
