Alphabets
So the first step to learn any language is to learn the writing script or alphabets
Hindi is written in the Devanagari script
In Hindi there are 2 categories
a) स्वर (Swar ) – vowels
b) व्यंजन (Vyanjan) – consonants
There are vowels diacritics, which are symbols attached to the consonants . we will learn more about this later
The virama (विराम ) indicates that the 'a' sound is muted.
For instance, this Hindi word would be pronounced as kam (कम). With the virama (विराम ) under the k (क्), it’s pronounced as km.So lets begin with the स्वर (swar)
अ- a
आ- aa – as in aunt
इ- i as in key (short ee)
ई- ee – as in eat (long ee)
उ- u (short oo)
ऊ- uu – as in tool (long oo)
ऋ- Ri
ए- e – as in ate
ऐ- ai – as in I
ओ- o
औ- ow – as in owl
अं - an
अः - ah
