I left my bedroom and strolled through the long hallways to get to the dining hall.
In the hallways, were paintings adorning the walls. There was a pattern, from the back of the castle, there were the eldest of queens and kings. As you got closer to the entrance, the newer portraits appeared.
As I reached the dining hall, I glanced at the closest empty wall.
That would either be me or my brother, Conner.
Or if Conner or I couldn't, somebody else.
I needed the throne. I needed to fix the unfair laws of Canamaria.
But the only way I would do that; is to become queen.
But I was second in line, not first.
Conner would be a good enough king, he's kind and smart.
But he's blind to the citizens of Canamaria's sufferings.
Canamaria's citizens are suffering from hunger, not being paid enough, and so much more that could easily be changed by several laws.
That is, if you saw the people's sufferings.
Then I saw Ace, guarding the dining hall entrance.
"Hello, Ace!" I waved to him.
"Hey, Val!" he flashed a grin at me.
I'd known Ace since I was a baby, he'd been born a year before me though.
I only knew Ace because my father's best friend is Ace's father.
Ace was sorta my playmate when we were younger.
Then, the draft came, about six months ago. I was (and still am) sixteen.
Ace had to join because his father was also a guard.
Either way, Ace was perfect for it.
He had that muscular build, but he was still very smart and cunning.
I entered the dining hall to find that Mother, Father, and Conner were already there.
"Hello, Mother, Father, Conner." I nodded at each of them while greeting them.
"Hello dear, your hair looks stunning today." Mother replied.
"I agree," said Conner.
Father simply nodded back at me.
I sat down and started to eat the pancakes, that were drizzled in Canamaria's native maple syrup and blueberries.
Breakfast was the same as usual, just eating in silence, sometimes someone would start a conversation.
Today, it was Mother who started talking.
"So, your father has decided that soon, you'll take over the throne, Conner." Mother said.
Conner's face lit up.
Mine stayed the same, so did Father's.
But I secretly felt dread, this meant that I had less time to become first in line to the throne.
"And that means, you need to find a wife."
I nearly choked on my pancakes, while Conner looked excited.
"We've gathered quite a few amazing women, at your ball, you'll dance and get to know each and every one of the women, then at the end of the ball, you'll declare who you loved to most. Also, you're not allowed to get... intoxicated. If you do, you won't be able to decide with a clear mind." continued Mother.
"Of course! I'm so excited! When will the ball start?" Conner asked.
"On your seventeenth birthday!" exclaimed Mother.
"You'll also need an Advisor, your Advisor will help you make your decision. It is best if you pick somebody close to you."
"Okay... I choose Val!"
