He escaped. He escaped and they didn't. 

He had to go back, so when the Harrington's were asleep, he only managed to save 008.

The two kept in touch until she said she wanted revenge, he told her that he would never kill anyone one protect and save them. 

They never spoke again.

Steve made sure to be careful, meaning he had to act normal it was hard trying to block out everyone's thoughts an trying not to respond to them it helped that he met Tommy and Carol, he got use to blocking out thoughts and memories only stopping the constant blocking when he was alone at home. He copied nearly everything Tommy said and did finding things out along the way. 

So here he is Steve Harrington, king of Hawkins high school and Papa still hasn't found him and he hasn't heard anything from around town about the lab so he just thinks the rest escaped, died or they just stopped their research.

That's what he thought it went downhill when he met Nancy Wheeler.

It wasn't all Nancy's fault but it was like a chain reaction, starting with her. They had been dating for some time now and then heard Will Byers had gone missing, Steve ignored that. Nancy did approach Will's order brother Jonathan asking if he needed any help and if he was okay. 

Steve decided to invite Nancy and her best friend Barbara Holland to his palace for a little get together.

Barbara left early, Steve and Nancy had sex. 

Barbara wasn't in the next day.

He found out Jonathan Byers was at his house taking pictures, he panicked because they were proof he was alive and they could find him, Brenner, Papa would find him. So he broke his camera and tore the pictures up. Nancy for some reason helped the creepy Byers kid pick up his broken camera and the ripped up pictures. 

Steve ignored that too.

After awhile of not seeing Nancy he goes to her window and see her with Jonathan. He jumps down from the window and drives to Tommy's house telling him what just happened. The next day Nancy Wheeler the slut is spray painted on the cinema, Nancy slaps him and he gets the shit beat out of him by Jonathan Byers. He then snaps at his best friend's realising how fake they are and drives away.

He's always the one to run away, he feels like a kid again.

Thank god the Harrington's forced Steve to play baseball in middle school because he swung that nailed bat like a pro. He swung at the demodog making it fall into the trap so Jonathan can light it on fire.

Will Byers came back from the dead or rather the upside down. Steve found out later, someone went into the void and opened a gate, someone like him his family he needs to find them but he hasn't been the void in ages.

It had been several months since the upside down business he had bought Jonathan a new camera for Christmas but he couldn't give it to him so he told Nancy to, he spent Christmas with the Wheeler's because once again the Harrington's weren't home again.

Steve decided to start practicing to control his powers again. Just in case when one day he doesn't have a nailed bat. Practicing his object manipulation starting with small objects and working his way up, he practices his telepathy, eventually he could probably enter the void again if he keeps trying.

Steve found out he was bullshit on Halloween night, he finds out later that Nancy doesn't love him and he also find out the same day that the gate to the upside down is still open.

The whole group is at the Byers house when Steve meet Eleven he lowers his bat and stares, she stares back. They don't say anything. Eleven greets everyone while Hopper and Mike talk. Steve doesn't say anything he regrets it but thinks maybe he can talk to her when it's all over because it's better and safer that way, well until Billy Hargrove shows up.
