Dawn broke as Lillia spotted Drayce and Caelum hurrying across the grounds to the stables. Some of her anxiety dissipated when she saw Drayce not about to collapse with exhaustion.
She was already dressed. She had been for a couple hours. She hadn’t been able to sleep, thinking about what Drayce and Caelum had been doing.
She rushed from the room and hurried out of the castle. She ran to meet then across the lawn. She stopped up short when she saw the thunderous look on Caelum’s face.
“What happened?” She asked immediately
Caelum stormed past her to the stables. There weren’t any stable hands up and about yet, so he started saddling his horse himself.
“Ella Rose is in danger.” Drayce said.
Lillia gasped. “Did something already happen to her?” She followed Drayce into the stable as well. He began saddling his own horse.
“We don’t know. We’re going to check on her.” Drayce said. “It’s probably nothing, but we need to make sure.”
“Let me come with you.” Lillia said.
Drayce shook his head right away. “No. If there’s any danger I don’t want you to be in harm’s way.”
“But you said it yourself, it’s probably nothing. Let me come.” Lillia demanded.
Drayce eyed her. “You aren’t wearing a riding habit and we’re in a hurry.”
Lilla waved her hand dismissively. “It’s fine we can go right now.”
Drayce rose an eyebrow. “Your ankles might show.” He pointed out, a sparkle of mischief in his eyes.
Lillia felt her face heat. “You’ve already seen my ankles.” She rushed on, anxious to change the subject. “Besides, if there’s danger then we’ll need to bring Ella and Cassian back to the castle and I may need to help with Cassian. He likes me a lot more than you.” She raised her own eyebrow.
Drayce chuckled softly. “You do seem to be good with kids.”
Lillia felt her heart rate increase at that comment. Did he already know? No, there was no way. She was confident that D’Hara would keep her mouth shut. It was probably just an offhand comment. She had to fight her own hand from going to her stomach.
“So, am I coming?” Lillia asked, aware that Caelum was watching them expectantly.
“Fine.” Drayce relented. He grabbed her around the waist and lifted her onto the horse. He mounted behind her a moment later.
“Let’s go.” Caelum said.

They got to Ella Rose’s neighborhood a half hour later. The crowds were coming out, as the working classes always got up early. Lillia looked over at Caelum. Every inch of him was tense.
“What exactly did Zathrian say?” Lillia asked Drayce softly.
“He very blatantly warned us that someone was planning on killing Ella Rose before the week was up.” Drayce responded.
