Hours. It had been hours. It had been long enough that Cassian had actually fallen asleep on the floor of the safe room.
Lillia had actually felt invigorated about their theory about the light, but her and Ella hadn't been able to come up with any more breakthroughs since then. That had dampened her excitement, seeing as there was only one attack to go.
One attack and they were dead. Unless they though of something that could take care of Keir.
A knock came at the door that made everyone jump. The guards unsheathed their swords. Everyone was on high alert.
"It's Drayce and Caelum." A tired voice said from the other side of the door.
Lillia sighed with relief. She recognized his voice. Still the guards weren't going to take chances, just as they had been told to.
"Password?" One of them grunted. She heard Caelum curse on the other side of the door, and Drayce shushed him.
"Keir can stick it."
The guards removed the lock and moved the panel aside. Drayce stood there. His face was a mess of cuts, a black eye, and broken nose. And by the matted state of his hair, Lillia guess several head injuries. Despite his grimey and sweaty uniform Lillia ran forward and smothered him in a hug. "Did they actually stick it?" she asked hopefully.
He chuckled. "Yes, thank Non."
Caelum scoffed. "You're not going to tell her?"
"Tell me what?" She asked pulling back.
Drayce looked uncomfortable. Caelum rolled his eyes. "Your husband pulled out some pretty freaky Mystic action and took out most of the army."
"What?" Lillia exclaimed with excitement. "You didn't run out?"
"No." Drayce said. "I almost died, but then somehow I transferred my consciousness into an energy surge without knowing it."
"He basically kicked trash while I thought he was dead on the ground." Caelum said. "All the soldiers think he's some sort of god now."
"Someone sounds grumpy about that." Ella said giving Caelum a brief hug.
"He's just tired and hungry." Drayce said. "Happens quite often to soldiers."
"How long till the next attack?" Lillia asked.
"It took us two hours to get back." Drayce said. "There was a five hour break last time, so we probably have around three hours."
"Holy Non, this is it." Ella said.
"No it's not." Caelum insisted. "We'll figure out a way to defeat Keir. We will. We have to."
"We've been saying tht for ages and haven't had any breakthrough." Ella pointed out.
"What about the Soulless then? Drayce can just become a storm of raw power again." Caelum suggested.
Drayce looked grim. "Caelum, I have no idea how I did that the first time. I don't know if I can do it again."
"Ella and I did have an idea for the Soulless." Lillia said.
"We theorize that one of the demon's weakness is light. Not just any light, but strong light, bright light." Ella said.
"The army was carrying lanterns earlier. It didn't do anything." Drayce said.
"It has to be brighter than that." Lillia said. "We could build a bonfire to ward them away from the city. Or use fire against them."
