A/N- Sorry for the wait, the next chapter should be up quicker than this one.

December, 844

It was time for the new recruits to embark on the first of their three winter survival exercises, one every year for each year of their training. This first one was done in pairs, with one person designated to carry the equipment on a sled, while the other was in charge of navigating through the frozen forests north of the Utopia District.

To make matters worse, not only were the cadets freezing their asses off in the below zero weather, but their assigned partners were ones that they didn't particularly know or get along with well, which happened to make the decision easy for the instructor on who to partner Y/N with, because anyone with half a working brain could see who to put him with.

He was unfortunate enough to be paired with Petra Ral, the girl he had a heavy dislike for because she was too curious for her own good, disguising it behind the 'we're comrades' sentiment. He should've seen it coming, in fact, he did, but he still had hope that he'd be paired with someone else, even Bozado would've been better than Ral.

And that's why he was in a snow covered forest, freezing to the bone in the north of Wall Maria, stuck with the one person he didn't want to be stuck with.

"If we go to the south east, we should reach the main camp in about an hour or so." Petra voiced her thoughts while she read the map, her thick winter clothing protecting her from the cold. "What do you think Y/N?"

"What do you want my opinion for?" Y/N asked the girl. "It's not my job to read the map, it's yours. My job is to haul the supplies with us, not to tell you what to do." He informed her.

"You could at least help me out you know." Petra sighed at his response. "Nobody is gonna know if we help each other out, isn't that supposed to be part of the exercise anyway?"

"But reading the map isn't the job I was given." Y/N repeated himself, really starting to annoy the ginger haired girl now. "I'm not going to read the map for you, do it yourself."

"You do realise that if I can't read the map then if affects us both right?" She retorted, exasperated with his attitude. "You have the maturity of a small child." She informed him. "We aren't going to get anywhere anytime soon if we don't work together."

"Well technically that isn't true." Y/N pointed out. "First of all, I'm only following you because I'm not supposed to read the map, secondly, if we're out here long enough, you'll most likely freeze to death before I do, so then I'll be able to go by myself because I know where I'm supposed to be going."

"What the hell is wrong with you?" Petra asked after his short explanation. "You'd really be that petty and let me freeze to death because you don't want to help me out?"

"Don't roll your eyes at me!" Petra yelled at him when he did just that. "We are out in the middle of nowhere, just about freezing and you're treating me like a little kid! You're only a year older than me, so stop acting like you're better than me, because you're not!"

Y/N stared her down, with Petra being about as intimidating as a small cat. "What are you gonna do about it?"

He was caught off guard with her sudden show of aggression, grabbing his coat and yanking him down to her eye level, the anger and rage so clear in her eyes. "I'll make it my mission to make you fail this test if you don't start to work together with me." She snarled at him. "And I will continue to do so until you learn how to cooperate with me."

He was unfazed, and unmoved by her actions, at least that's the look he was giving her, but she didn't back down, it was something he could respect about her, she didn't have a clue about anything, but she was willing to risk failing the test just to spite him.
