Standing on the edge of a bottomless pit. The three of us stood wordlessly. With me being hoisted up by Mitch and Frankie. Watching the trails of smoke rise freely. Our minds numb from battle.
"How many was that?" I say, struggling to keep my eyes open. My arms were burning and felt like dead weight.
"Probably too many to fricken count." Mitch replies in a low mutter.
Mitch kicks a pebble into the gaping hole. None of us heard it hit the bottom.
For a while none of us spoke. We savored the moment with silence. Enjoying the break from the terror of facing monsters. But we all knew we had to get back to it. To face another wave of hell spawns and maybe countless more until this whole war is over.
"Say it." Mitch urges suddenly. Frankie and I shared confused exchanges. "Someone has to. Say what needs to be heard, man. You're our leader. So..."
I blink in understanding. He needed someone to give him the order to keep fighting. Now that I think back on it, Tammy was like that. Quick to dish order after order. I thought she was just being bossy, but now I realize she was doing so to spare us the burden of having to force ourselves to keep fighting. So she did it for us through orders. To rid out fears with responsibility. Like how a solider needs to be told to kill civilians.
In the grand scheme of things, she might have been evens nicer person than Sophie. And my dumb self took her for granted.
I curl my lip inward and nodded.
"Right." I stand on my two feet. "There's no time to be standing around. As long as that crack remains in the sky, this isn't over. But for now, we need to keep moving. Regroup with the others and see what needs to be done for there."
The two boys nod in agreement.
"Truthfully, I wanna help out George-" I stop in my tracks and curse silently. "I meant Bruce and Carter as soon as possible. But that might have to wait until after we all-"
A fierce howl shakes the air around us. We all whip around towards the direction of the sound. Frankie puts a straight hand on his forehead and squints.
"Looks like its coming from where George was." He answers.
I exhale wearily. "More demons." I squint my eyes as another thought slips into mind. "Or it could be the remains of a powerful spell."
"Hold on, look over there!" Mitch points to our left. A group of hooded figures were marching their way towards us.
"Reinforcements already?" I croak, stunned. That alone puts a smile on my face. "Good timing. This makes things easier for us. Don't y'all think?"
I turn to face the two. Frankie's face had gotten pale.
"W-What is it?" I asked shakily.
"I smell blood."
"What? Like demon blood? Of course! They just-"
"No," Frankie cuts off Mitch. "Human blood."
A sick chill travels down my spine. Mitch looked ready to puke, as cold sweat makes his face glossy.
It was Roger's group. Mixed in with about fifty other Hunters. Majority being around our age. Along with that mysterious teal-haired girl being with them. But someone was missing.
