You will never understand the damage you did to someone until the same thing happens to you. That's why I'm here.❜

I tightened my ponytail as Darren I got ready to run. The whole school was here and once the teachers had found about the bet and the allowed class to start ten minutes late.

Not that I'll be needing it.

My heart for racing as I calculated if I could beat him. My fastest time for a mile run was 4:21, and that was about a month ago, but I hadn't practiced after that.

We got ready on the start line, our fingers barely touching the ground.

The coach got the stopwatch and then announced, "Darren is the record holder of this school with a mile run of 4:12. If you beat him, you will be the new record holder."

Well crap.

I nodded my head and decided that I was ready to pass out for this. As soon as the coach raised the whistle to his mouth, I tensed, then shot off like a bullet.

For the first two laps, we both were neck and neck, not letting anyone have an advantage. Round the start of the third lap though, Darren started to slow down just a bit. I ignored him and focused on beating 4:12.

By the time I had started the fourth lap, Darren was about three feet behind me and the clock read 2:57.

I growled and pushed myself the farthest I had ever done, the student slowly started to cheer me on. I refrained myself from smiling and practically full-on sprinted the last lap. When I was twenty yards away from the finish line, I heard Darren come up behind me. He had to push himself far just to catch up to me, but I wasn't done yet.

We both were almost next to each other when we crossed the ten-yard line but at the last moment, I lunged and made it over by a good ol' inch.

The coaches started talking to each other like teenagers gushing over the stopwatch as Devin came over to me and helped me up after I had not so gracefully slept on the floor.

The whole student body was quiet and that was the longest, most tiring, five seconds of my life.

"Congratulations to Minerva for setting a new school record by two seconds!"

The girls erupted into screams and cheers; except for the cheerleaders. They stayed snobby, but Skylar came over congratulated me.

As I walked back towards the class slowly with the student body, I gave the last look of triumph towards Darren, accompanied by a smirk, before falling in step next to Devin.

We took a seat in the back of the class, the kids praising me over and over again. I saw Hunter and another boy accompanied by Archer walk towards us and Devin whispered.

"Right, I forgot to tell you that the dumbasses are in this class too."

I quietly groaned as they walked up to us.
