6th November, 1955
As Mimi unlocked the door, Paul couldn't help but just stare at the ground. He felt overwhelmed, surrounded by a mass of old fashioned house exterior.
"Come on, darlin'" Mimi spoke, pulling him out of his thoughts
Paul just smiled up at her, nodding and walking through the door. John followed behind, sighing happily at the warm feeling of the house.
John took his jacket off, placing it on the coatrack.
"Just follow us in 'ere, Paulie." The boy spoke, walking ahead. Paul tried to catch up, both taking in his surroundings and hopping along behind him.
The living room looked very old fashioned. The fireplace was stone, the stone even continuing all the way over to the windowsill. Their small TV was on a small stand, with many, many wires trailing out from the back of it.
Paul tried not to stare, but he couldn't help himself.
"You not 'ave a TV at home, Paul?" John asked, noticing John staring aimlessly at the thing.
"Oh, I- Yeah we do. Just not as... Big?"
"Oh yeah." He smiled, walking up to it and patting it. "This bad boy is one of the biggest, isn't that right, Mimi?" He called to the woman, who walked inside the room, taking her hat off and placing it on the back of the sofa.
"What?" She asked, ruffling her own hair, until she noticed John. "Oh, John. Get off the TV, you're gonna break it!" The woman complained, walking over to him and shooing him away. "Go on, away with you. How about you go and get Paul a drink?"
"Aye. What would you like, son?" He asked the younger boy, who was standing in front of the sofa, crutches still under both of his armpits.
"Do you have any coke?"
"Yeah, I'll get you some now." And at that, he ran out of the room.
"Don't be afraid to sit down, Paul." Mimi smiled at him.
"Right." He nodded, lowering himself onto the soft, dark red material. It was comfy, no word of a lie.
"Are you alright? You seem a bit jumpy, dear."
"Yeah... I'm just uh- cold."
"Oh, no problem." She headed over to the fireplace, bending down and turning on the gas fire.
Paul looked down, only looking back up when he saw John's shadow re-enter the room.
"I hope you don't mind drinkin' from a can. Mimi bought 'em new the other day." He handed him the can.
Even the coke can looked different.
"No, it's fine." He smiled, taking it into his own hands.
"I hope you don't mind, Paul..." The woman began, raising to her feet. "...But the bed for your little room was supposed to arrive this morning, however they rang up and cancelled. So, me and John spoke, and he said you can stay in his bed for the meantime. Is that okay?"
"What? With John?" He asked, his mouth falling open at that suggestion.
"Oh!" She began to laugh. "Oh heavens, no." Mimi joked, eyeing John strangely.
"Right. Sorry..."
"No, it's fine. Do you wanna watch somethin' on telly, Paul?"
"Sure." He nodded, sitting on the sofa and waiting for John fall down on the seat next to him.
-
They had spent most of that afternoon on the sofa, watching TV or listening to some of Mimi and John's records.
