TWENTY-FIVE

"Hey, Navi, which way to go next?" Diego snickered while glancing at the girl beside him.

Abigail frowned, fighting the urge to kick his foot off the pedal.

They were inside Diego's car, hightailing their target in a route different from the police. The killer goose chase was finally ending and they wanted to make sure it did. That person's been going out and about for a few weeks now, annoying both the police and vigilantes.

Diego had his eyes on the road, his car was at max speed. He looked over to Abigail, who was seated on the shotgun and holding on to the glove compartment.

"There's a shortcut when you turn left," she spoke and the car shot to the left, causing her to almost hit her head on the window. "Careful!"

"We're in a chase, Abigail, what do you expect?!" Diego retorted while checking his mirror for any police car following them. "You sure this leads to the sewers quicker?"

"Of course I do, I--turn right!"

The high pitched shrill of the tires screeching was heard.

"I said careful!"

Diego laughed. "Finally, we're catching this rat."

The girl smiled, staring back at the road. "Don't forget your end of the bargain."

"Since when did I ever back down on my word?"

"Hmm...I think I have a good topic to talk about on my coffee date."

"Don't."

The smile on the girl's lips widened.

The police radio, which they 'borrowed', was standing atop the glove compartment. It gave off a static noise before a voice came in. Diego and Abigail glanced at it as a masculine voice was heard from the other side of the radio, telling the police team to retreat.

The man scoffed, keeping the car on the road. "Guess it's just you and me now, Abigail."

He paused. "Hey, how'd you even know the criminal hides in the sewers?"

"I would always sniff sewer smell on almost all their victims," Was the girl's only response. "I wasn't sure at first until the killer ran past us when they tried to escape."

"That's one good nose you got there."

"I was just lucky I knew how awful the sewers smell like here."

Finally, Abigail pointed to the edge of the pavement blocked with no entry signs. "Right there!"

The car skidded to a stop and Abigail was lucky she was holding on to the glove compartment. She huffed when her back hit the car seat. Diego scrambled out of his car and Abigail did so after a while. She caught up to Diego who suddenly tossed her a metal object. Abigail realized it was a gun.

Abigail cringed, giving Diego a look.

"Just in case," He spoke and walked ahead.

As Abigail placed the gun inside her sling bag, Diego handed her a flashlight. The two went through the barricades and found the entrance to the city's underground sewage system. They ventured down the sewers as the smell from the sewer water right next to them made Diego scowl. The girl behind him snorted and walked past him.

She hit him on the back. "C'mon clean freak, we don't have all day."

"Impatient, are we?" Diego caught up to her. "Got something to do back home?"
