TWO MONTHS LATER

"Now if you would give a warm welcome to your Grey Oats class of 2019 president  and valedictorian Melody Anne White." Principal Cunning said into the microphone

Clapping filled the stadium as I made my way onto the stage, making sure I didn't trip on the steps or over my graduation gown.

"Good afternoon, faculty, staff, family, friends, and graduates. It is an honor to be speaking with you here today. Graduates of the class of 2019, congratulations!!" I say clapping along with everyone else

"As class president and valedictorian, it is an honor to be speaking with you all here today. I will admit that writing this speech was much harder than any thesis or essay I've written over the last four years. And believe me, I would have never imagined that there would be anything harder than that. The hard part about it is that I was told my speech had to make you laugh first, then cry, and then inspire you. And it had to be short... So you can see, that's not a very easy task to accomplish, but I will try."

"It is such a pleasure to share in the intensity of emotions filling this stadium as our graduates close this chapter of their lives. Of course, living through the years between kindergarten and graduating may have seemed like an eternity for both the students and some parents at well."

"Class of 2019, we did it. We graduate in a time when our world is dealing with enormous challenges, but at a time when the opportunities created by those challenges have never been greater. We are the generation that will take today to new and dizzying dimensions. We are the ones who will bring solutions to environmental concerns, global warming, conservation of natural resources, and development of alternative energy sources."

"And who knows? There may come a time that some of us will live on a space station circling the earth. Someone among us may find the cure for cancer or walk on Mars. So, this afternoon we are poised to start a new chapter of our life's story."

"The time we've spent together these last four years of our lives have prepared us for this day. The day that the class of 2019 finally leaves their nest and spreads their wings, finding who we are and what our place is in this world. Congratulations to my fellow graduates!"

Everyone claps as I smile before walking off stage. Whew, I'm glad that's over. The last last-minute speech I'll ever have to do.

AFTER THE CEREMONY

"Melody I'm so proud of you!" My mom says hugging me

"Mom it's hot." I say as I try to loosen her grip around me

"Oh hush, just give me a hug." She says grabbing my hands and putting them around her

I can't help but chuckle as I wrap my arms around her.

"My little girl isn't little anymore. Now you're going off to college and we'll be all alone." My dad says rubbing my head

"Hey. Hey. Not the hair." I say fixing it

"College?" Caleb ask

"Yep your sister was accepted into every school she applied for. Where did you decide to go honey?" My mom asks pulling away from the hug

"UH..." I say scratching my neck

Guess it's time to just rip the bandage off.

"Wait, we should all talk at home. This is a conversation for our family and our family alone." Caleb says putting his arm around my shoulder

"Right. Plus I'm sure you want to speak with your friends, right Mel?" My dad asks

"Yep sure do. Going now, bye, love you guys get home safe." I say waving them off before walking  away
