~CLAY POV~
Wake up, a voice called out to him.
Wake up, it said to him once again.
WAKE UP, the voice said for one last time before slapping him awake, literally.
Clay immediately shot up from the bed, accidentally elbowing George hard in the stomach, who was already awake and hovered over him.
"Ow! What the hell?" George groaned.
"What's happening? Are there zombies nearby? Why did you slap my face?" Clay asked, worried and confused.
"Nothing's happening, stupid. We're having breakfast right now, and surprisingly you're the last one awake," George explained. "Get up, everyone's waiting for you."
Clay exhaled a breath of relief and crawled off the bed. He and George walked downstairs to the dining room and joined the other 4 boys.
"Look who's all awake now!" Nick exclaimed, receiving a scoff from Clay. He took a seat beside George and looked for food from the table to eat. Soon enough, Vincent came up to the table with a tray in his hand. He was disoriented to see that the only available option was one tangerine per person.
Clay furrowed his eyebrows together, hesitantly taking one from the tray.
Darryl could tell the upset expression bestowed upon Clay's face and started to explain the situation.
"Yeah, we're kinda running out of food, and although we should've told you earlier, you looked too tired to care..." Darryl said, mumbling the last few words of his sentence.
"Wait, what? What do you mean we're running out?" Clay abruptly questioned, frustration evident in his voice. "Didn't you stock up a bunch last week?"
"Not exactly... most of the time Zak and Darryl were fighting off zombies," Vincent admitted, joining the conversation.
Clay pinched the bridge of his nose, sighing heavily. Nick and George awkwardly patted his shoulders in an attempt to reassure him.
"I would just go out and get more supplies, but we're literally in the middle of nowhere, and I don't want to risk getting lost. Nick, you drove us here right?" Clay asked, trying to find a solution. Nick nodded in response.
"Okay, do you think you could find us a supermarket or something? Any will do, as long as it has food," Clay said, hoping that the answer would be a positive one.
Nick stared at the ceiling, thinking about the options before answering.
He shook his head in disappointment. "There is a supermarket, but it's an hour and a half away," Nick described. "I'm not sure if any of you would be willing to go on a road trip every time we need food."
Clay released a small breath of relief, a tiny bit glad there was at least one option available.
"I mean, an hour and a half isn't THAT bad, right?" Darryl spoke, joining the conversation. "Every time we go, we'd just have to stack up a bunch."
"Yes, but expiry dates are a thing, Darryl. Obviously, we could just get canned goods, but do you really want to eat tomato soup every other day?" George contested, receiving a defeated groan from Darryl.
Not knowing what to say, all of them sat in an awkward silence while Clay formed out a plan.
"Okay, I think the best thing to do is decide who gets us food every 3 weeks. There needs to be at least 3 people, two getting the food and one keeping out for danger. Like you said, Nick, it's an hour and a half away, so we'd have to make the most of it," Clay explained.
"Haha no, you guys can do the dirty work," Zak smirked, leaning back into his seat. Darryl and Vincent joined in the act, receiving glares from Nick and George.
"Wow, okay then. I guess that just leaves us three to get the supplies," George concluded, eyes pointing towards Clay and Nick.
Clay remained unfazed and got up, walking towards Nick's bag that was sitting on the living room table.
"Uhh, what are you doing, Clay?" Nick questioned, slightly puzzled. His question was quickly answered as Clay snatched the car keys out of the bag and jiggled it in his hands.
"We're leaving for supplies now, so gather a bunch of bags and get in the van," Clay demanded. "It's better we get supplies sooner than later."
George and Nick stared at each other before following Clay's instructions, knowing how'd he react if they said otherwise. Clay was the smartest in the group, anyways.
"Be safe out there guys," Darryl uttered, receiving a reassuring nod from Clay.
The 3 of them stepped out of the house and into the van that was parked in front of it. As soon as they got in, Clay started to explain the plan that they were going to follow.
"Nick, since you know the path we're supposed to take, you're going to drive us to and from the supermarket. Me and George are gonna gather the supplies while you lookout for danger," Clay clarified.
George and Nick hummed in response, mentally agreeing with his plan.
"Alright, I guess we should get going now. Nick, you got the wheel!" Clay exclaimed.
He chuckled a bit before starting up the engine, pushing the car pedal as they drove away in the distance.
