Jeon Jeongguk is in quandary.
What does she mean by he should've asked her if she wanted him to let her go?
If it wasn't for the second day of the school sports fest, he wouldn't have forced himself to sleep and then ponder about it all night. But he is their soccer team's captain, he has the responsibility to be in good shape for the game.
Hence he continued pondering about it in the morning instead. He pauses when they play, then ponder again. He could've fetched her from her dormitory if she's going to attend the festival, but he has to host morning practices before the competition. Luckily it was worth it since they won the first match.
He should be relaxed by now since the only thing they need to do to receive the gold medal is to win the next match.
Yet there he is sitting on a bench, blankly eyeing those picture-taking people in the field, sighing.
Lunch has already passed, yet she's still nowhere to be found.
"We won earlier, captain." Jeongguk turn his face to where the voice came from. It was Eunwoo sitting beside him on the same wooden plank. "What's the long face for?"
"I was trying to catch the MVP's attention and it worked."
"I know, and you're welcome." They chortled. But it wasn't long before Eunwoo immediately dropped his smile. "But seriously though, are you okay? Are you thirsty?"
"Thirsty? Hm." Jeongguk hummed. He propped himself up on his palms as his eyebrow rose up in suspicion. "Are you trying to make a pun?"
"No. I'm just asking if you want a water bottle."
"It's strange that you're asking me that so suddenly." Jeongguk's eyebrows knitted while his eyes gaze at the latter skeptically. He laughed afterwards. "But no, thank you. We're going in twenty minutes. I don't want to have toilet problems during the game."
"I insist. I'll bring a special one to you." Eunwoo immediately got up as soon as he finished his sentence. Jeongguk scoffed consequently. Before the captain could even speak, the latter cut him. "Your shoes are untied by the way."
"What . . ." Jeongguk averted his gaze and looked down to his toes. Both of the shoelaces are nicely knotted. He shook his head because sometimes he couldn't understand his teammate's mind. Soon he felt the coldness of the water bottle poking his cheek, he turned his head and grabbed it. "You're really up to something, ain't . . . ya . . ."
He must be dreaming.
"Your teammate told me that you needed water, hope that'll be enough." Hyunji smile, sitting beside him.
Jeongguk was frozen on the spot. All he could do was to breathe out a thanks and stare. He can surely feel the coldness of the drink, it is condensing and taking the dryness away from his grip. A lucid dream could never be as detailed as this.
"That's not free though, since it's pretty expensive." Hyunji's voice confirmed that he is indeed awake.
"Then what it's worth?" He asked.
"A gold medal." She answered and his heart pounded.
Little did Jeongguk know, Hyunji also has given a lot of thought about their situation last night. She reflected on it over and over. She might be a fool to still try knowing this might give her another pain, but everyone deserve second chances.
Somehow she admitted that she was wrong too. She was blinded by her own feelings and was insecure. She could never tell that he likes her back because of her insecurity. She made herself overthink because of it. Both of them are wrong. If only one of them had the guts to speak up about their true feelings right away, then things could have been resolved quickly.
But the past is not important right now, nor the future. They should focus on the present, and now he likes her and she likes him back. If they could make each other happy with their fake relationship before, then what's more if it's real?
"Then what if I don't win?" He asked again.
"Well, it's not your very last game, is it?"
He nodded with a smile.
Being able to see the most beautiful smile from the most beautiful lady in the world is more triumphant than winning hundreds of gold medals. He will not dare to remove that from her face ever again. He ought to cherish not only it, but all of her.
And this time he will not let go until she tells him to do so.
"I think I've won already."
No rush. They will take it slowly. If he lose today, then he would serenade her with a song and try again on the next game.
No. He will serenade her, win or lose.
No acting anymore. Just the real them this time. Then all will be okay.
