chapter 22

Tris's POV

The guys come up and we start serving. As I serve Annabeth's plate, the doorbell rings. Tobias takes over and I walk to the door.

When I open the front door, I am astonished at the man I see before me. "Hey, Tris."

I am so surprised I can barely say his name. "Matthew?" He nods and I ask, "I thought you decided to move to the city. What are you doing here?"

"I know you have a lot of questions. And I will gladly answer them if you just-" He is interrupted by Haley coming into the room.

"Tris, what's taking. . . so long." She pauses when she sees Matthew. "Harrison? Is that you?"

"Haley? What are you doing here? Tris, can I please come in?" I nod and close the door as he walks enters the house. Then I call Tobias in. He walks in, kisses my cheek, and then sees Matthew.

Haley's POV

Harrison is here. Why did he change his name to Matthew. I want to know why he left me. But I have a feeling I am about to find out.

"Look, I have a lot of things to tell you, starting with my past. I grew up in the city. Born and raised in Erudite. On my aptitude test day I found out that I was Erudite and Amity. I transferred to Amity, where I met Haley. I found out she was Divergent too. We married and she became pregnant. I panicked. We were already taking a big risk marrying when both of us are Divergent. But having a kid? That was too much. So I ran away, changed my name, and found refuge with the Bureau." He turns to me. "Believe me when I say this, though, Haley. I did it for you and the baby. I did it for us. For the family. Will you ever forgive me?" Matthew walks towards me and leans in close. He whispers in my ear, "Please. Remember when we used to sit in the Amity Greenhouse and make fun of all the weird looking plants? Remember sneaking out at night, watching the stars, and rolling around in the grass?" I laugh and nod at the memories. I press my lips to his and pull away slowly.

"Can it really be like that again?" I ask nervously. He nods and I see a tear roll down his cheek. "It's okay." I wrap my arms around his neck and smile/cry. Then our lips meet.

Just then, Skylar and Shaliene walk in, and seeing Matthew and me kissing, they yell, "GROSS!!!!" Then, Skylar asks, "Mom, who is that?"

"GROSS!!! MOM, DAD!!!!" Shaliene is looking the other direction and when I turn my head, I see Tris and Tobias making out. They look up and mutter an apology. I laugh. Then, Sky says, "Mom, who's that?"

Matthew glances at her and whispers, "Is-is she ours?" I nod.

"Her name's Skylar." I whisper. Then, I sniff, wipe my face, and walk up to her. "He's your father. He's come back, Sky!"

Tobias and Tris walk out of the room with Shaliene as Matthew makes his way to his daughter. "I've always wondered what your name is and if you were a girl or a boy." He brushes her hair out of her face.

"But I don't understand, Dad. Why did you leave me?" She asks, tears in her eyes.

Matthew explains. "You've heard about the war, right?" She nods her head. "Well, your mother and I were both Divergent. She was Amity, Candor, and Abnegation. I was Amity and Erudite. When we found out about you, guilt trampled inside me. I thought to myself. How could I bring a helpless little baby into a world, where she'd be wanted by the power-hungry Jeanine Matthews. I mean, that was the whole reason why I left Erudite. For refuge. And I am so sorry I ever put you and your mom through this. So do you forgive me?"

Sh replies, "I forgive you." He picks her up and pulls me into a hug.

"I love you." I tell him. He kisses my forehead and I say, "Let's go eat."

(four months later)

Tobias's POV

It is April sixth. Tris's and my anniversary. Our new baby is due in a week but I have a feeling it will come soon. We decided to make it a surprise, but asked if it is only one. Thankfully, it is. Tris just had a contraction and I am counting the minutes.

Seven minutes. She screams and yells, "The baby! I think it's coming!" I round up the kids and we head outside.

We jump into the car and head to the hospital. I call Zeke and he answers, "Yo bro."

"Hey, man. Tris just had some contractions. Seven minutes apart. On our way to the hospital." He says "okay" and then I hang up. I grab Tris's hand and she squeezes it hard, as she has another sharp pain.

When we finally get into the hospital, they put us in Room 146. After a couple of minutes Zeke enters. "Hey, Tris. I'm just going to take a quick look at the baby and then we will begin." He explains. The nurse he is with rubs some gel on Tris's stomach, looking at the screen. Shauna isn't with him because she is seven months pregnant. "Alright! The baby is nice and healthy. Are you two ready?" We nod and the delivery starts.

Will's POV

"Come meet your new brother, guys." Dad tells us after we wait so long. He leads us to their room, where I see my new brother.

I am the first to speak. "What's his name?"

Mom looks up and smiles. Her face is tear streaked, but other than that, she looks fine. "Toby. Toby Gale Eaton. Would you like to hold him?" I nod. She hands him to me and I look down at him and smile. I have another brother. At least Percy and I won't be surrounded by girls.

Toby Gale. The first name is short for my father's name, Tobias. I was named after a friend of my mother's and my grandfather. Every time I ask her about them, though, she just bursts into tears. I know Natalie was named after my grandmother and Christina. Shaliene and the others weren't named after anyone, but they are special to my parents nonetheless.

I hand Toby to Dad but he grabs hold of my nose. "Toby! Please let go of my nose?" I laugh. He doesn't, and everyone is doubling over in hysterical laughter. He finally lets go and Dad takes him from me.

The door opens and Shauna, Zeke, Uriah, and Christina walk in. "Are you guys ready to go?" Christina asks us.

We nod and Uriah exclaims, "We're gonna have so much fun!!!!" I smile. Uriah is always cheerful and fun. One time we actually pulled a prank on my dad with his help. It was sooo funny.

I hug Mom, and say, "Bye Mom and Dad. See you later Toby!"

Tris's POV

After the kids leave with Chris and Uriah, Zeke asks us how Toby is. "Fine. How is Shauna?" I asks. Since she is seven months pregnant with a baby girl, Zeke made her stay home with Kishan and Cody.

"She's great. She's been having some contractions so I'd better be going." He gestures to the nurse who had helped out with the delivery. "I'll leave you two with Catherine. If you need anything, just ask her. Oh, and happy anniversary!"

"Thanks." I reply. "I guess this is the baby's present to us for it."

Zeke leaves and I pat the empty space beside me. "Lie down with me Tobias and Toby." I giggle at the names. Tobias didn't want anyone named after him but I convinced him to just name him Toby.

He hands me Toby and climbs onto the hospital bed. We put Toby in between us and as I drift off to sleep, I hear Tobias say, "I love you both." I want to say it back but sleep finds fast.
