New Year's Day

That epic story they told,
Of lovers on the road
Sounds familiar somehow,
And as you look back at me I know why, now.

You and I were meant to get our hearts torn.
In this daydream we've created in sudden heat and storm.
You call out to me, and then I know.
My mind has changed; I don't want to go.

Holding my gaze, smiling and kissing my lips under the moon,
We were covered in nothing but innocence and expectations and promises of of 'soon'
But a cold wind wrapped around it all,
Twirling and twirling, until I thought we would fall.

The ending of that epic tale was never told right
Because we cried and laughed that entire night.
Goodbyes are forever and it just felt wrong to say
So I whispered to you 'maybe someday'.

I'm looking out from the roof, watching you walk home,
And every step you take I feel more alone.
But what is life without a little pain?
Yes, there'd be no sunshine without all of this rain.

And if I had said no to you that day,
My life would be less livable in some way.
There are no regrets when it comes to my heart,
Even if one side is here and the other ...far and far apart.
