Lexie smiled as she gingerly ran her fingers lightly across the thick book. She loved books so much but her father hated them, so she couldn't have any to herself. She glanced at the time and decided she could go a little way if she read fast in the next fifteen minutes.
Just as she reached for it, a hand also made a grab for it. Lexie turned to argue for the book but her words were caught in her throat. Nothing could come out. His eyes were so blue. It was beautiful and shocking. Lexie had never seen anything like it before. She cleared her throat as she managed to look him in the eye.
"Excuse me? I was here first".She said.
Nathan frowned and let his gaze roam over her again. She had checked him out but he couldn't stop checking her out. She was beautiful in a quiet way. She was not the kind of woman who liked to flaunt her looks. In his honest opinion, if she could allow her beauty, she would definitely have men chasing after her.
"Yeah. So? My hand is on it".He replied with an arch of his perfect eyebrow.
Lexie took a deep breath inwardly "Please. Let me read the book. I will soon be gone anyway and then you can have it all to yourself. Just... let me...please"
Nathan sighed as he battled with the discomfort he felt at the way she had pleaded with him. He let her have it and watched her scurry away after thanking him. Something was familiar but he couldnt pin-point it. Shrugging, he let it go.
Looking around the library, he felt a twinge of pride.
"Excuse me, sir? Is there anything you need?" the voice drew him from his thoughts. Shaking his head in the negative, he sat a concealed corner where he could watch everything going on without being observed... especially her. His gaze lingered on her as he watched her flip the page enthusiastically. He grinned despite himself.
He watched as her cell phone rang. Lexie picked it. Her face drained of all color as she sat there numb at the sound of her father's angry voice
"Where the fuck are you, bitch? Do you think I have got all day waiting for you to bring me my stuff? You had better be here in the next one minute" Lexie could hear the sneer in his voice "Clock's ticking"
Lexie swung around, scared for her life. She breathed out in relief as she sighted Nathan who had made himself visible to her and quickly handed the book back to him.
"Thank you." She made to leave but Nathan had grabbed her hand. Lexie jerked her hand away out of reflex, scared. Nathan would have scoffed in a normal situation, instead he put his hands-palms out- worried
"I am sorry. Did I scare you?"
Lexie shook her head "No. I've got to go"
Nathan held on to her hand again and watched as Lexie's gaze drifted to their joined hands.
"Are you okay?"
Lexie made an attempt at smiling but it fell through. Tears stung at the back of her lids. Nathan rubbed her hand assuredly. "Let me take you, okay?"
Lexie was about to refuse but he was already pulling her out to the garage. He stopped at a black Mitsubishi truck and opened the passenger door for her to get in. Lexie climbed in hesitantly after a gentle prod by Nathan.
Nathan smiled in relief as he got in and sped towards their destination. "Where to?"He asked with a glance at Lexie who was staring out the window.
"Freepark 101, Turner street" she replied, avoiding his eye as he drove on.
At the junction, she alighted hurriedly. "Thanks for taking me. Bye". She shut the door and ran. Nathan's gaze followed her as he sat in the drivers seat confused as to what had just happened. Why was she running? He wondered as he switched gears and drove on.
