Eddie Kaspbrak was sitting at the kitchen table, his fanny pack in front of him, sorting out his medication for the day. He sighed, knowing her would never be able to get out of taking those fake pills that his mother always forced down his throat.
"Stupid pills," he muttered under his breath.
Suddenly the phone rang. Eddie stood up and walked over to the table that the phone sat on. After a few rings, he picked it up.
"Hello?" he asked into the phone. "Oh, hey Bill."
"Hi, Eddie," Bill's voice came through the receiver. He sounded really sad.
"Are you okay?" Eddie questioned, worried that Bill had gotten sick or something.
"Bev's just left Derry with her aunt..." came Bill's response.
'Of course. She was leaving today. How could we all forget?' Eddie thought.
"Oh..." was all Eddie could say.
"I was thinking, want to get everyone together and go to the clubhouse?" he suggested.
"Sure," Eddie replied. "I think Richie's at the arcade, I can go and bring him on my way, if you can get the others."
"Okay, meet you there in an hour?" Bill said.
"Yeah, see you."
"Bye, Eddie."
The line went dead after Bill hung up. Eddie carefully placed the phone down, grabbed his blue inhaler, leaving the rest of the stuff behind, and darted towards the door. His mother stepped in front of him, blocking his path out of the house.
"Where do you think you're going, Eddie Bear?" she asked, talking to him as if he was three years old, not thirteen.
"Ma, I'm going to see my friends. Bev's just left with her aunt and Bill's really sad. Ben will be, too. Let me go to them," Eddie said confidently. He had turned on his mother once before, he could do it again if he had to.
"The Marsh girl? She's left town has she?" his mother asked, a devilish grin on her face. Eddie didn't understand what all of the adults had against Bev. She was so kind and an amazing friend. Nobody really believed the rumours, did they?
"Yes," Eddie replied.
"Good. I don't want you hanging around with a dirty girl like her, Eddie Bear."
Eddie hated that nickname, it made him sound like a child who couldn't do anything for himself. Sonia Kaspbrak had no idea how brave her son had been the month before, and how he had a huge part in defeating the monster that had terrorised the town for centuries.
"None of those rumours are true, Ma. Beverly is a badass. She's my best friend. Now can I go?"
Sonia sighed in defeat and moved out of the way as Eddie ran out of the door. She turned around and noticed that his fanny pack and pills were still on the table. She grabbed them and hobbled out of the door.
"Eddie! Your medicine!" she yelled down the street, but Eddie was already out of sight.

Eddie ran into the arcade, out of breath, and went over to Richie, who was playing Street Fighter – his favourite game. Eddie resisted the urge to use is inhaler.
'You don't need it,' he told himself. 'It's not real medicine. It doesn't help.'
"Richie..." Eddie said, breathless.
