~Dude, where you at?~
Peter pulled his phone out of his back pocket as he approached the park, to see the text from Ned asking where he was. He looked up to see his friends waving at him from one of the benches, a smile spreading across his face. As he got closer, he noticed Emily was sat with them, laughing at whatever witty joke Ned had to tell. It was good to see her more comfortable and familiar with people, especially now as her eyes lit up every time a smile perked up on her face. "Good to see you again, Emily," Peter said as he dropped his bag on the ground and sat on the grass opposite them. "Well, it's about time you show up," MJ chuckled as she plucked grass from the ground. "Sorry, I got caught up with aunt May, you know how her charity work goes sometimes..." Peter responded. "What work is that?" Emily asked, cocking her head to the side. "Oh she helps to run the homeless shelter a few blocks from here, you heard of FEAST?" Peter pointed back behind him in the direction of the FEAST center. "Dude, your aunt is a saint, I don't know where she gets the time," Ned joined. "Oh well, I guess she always said 'you help one person, you help everyone'," Peter replied. "I guess she's got a good point there," MJ agreed. "What's your family like, Emily?" She turned to her friend sat on the bench. "Oh, it's just me and my mom, just the two of us. I'm not in touch with my dad, but I guess that's normal these days," the group nodded in response.
"Guys, spiderman is on the news again!" Ned exclaimed, staring at his phone, glancing up to Peter. The group huddled around to see the video a passerby uploaded to twitter. "What-man?" Emily asked. Ned's jaw dropped as he looked at her. "You never heard of our friendly neighborhood Spiderman?!" The other two looked just as stunned. "Can't say I know this neighborhood very well, let alone its heroes... I know Ironman!" she laughed at their stiff faces. "Yeah because he's a global hero!" Ned scoffed back "Well Spiderman is like his sidekick, or intern, or city babysitter, or something..." as he spoke his voice got quieter, as he noticed Peter glaring at him from the corner of his eye. "Anyway, let's watch..." he insisted as he hit play.
The video was a bit shaky as the civilian was clearly very excited about what was going on. You could hear faint gunshots coming from the building, with the screaming of people inside and outside of the bank, and within seconds the police sirens were drowning out the sounds. Smoke poured out of the front entrance as spiderman walked out, addressing a policewoman as she stepped out of the car. This was the first time Emily had ever seen this hero, and she had to admit, she was enjoying the show. How cool she found the concept of someone discovering their talents and using them for the greater good. Only to now feel shivers down her spine at the thought of anyone using these powers for any profit, good or bad. The camera panned to follow spiderman as he swung away from the scene at great speed. "How does he know when the crimes are going on?" Emily asked. "Well, he's always swinging around town so he's likely to stumble across something illegal," Ned replied. "You know, I heard he has contact with the chief of police in the area so he gets alerted when something's going down," Peter chipped in, nodding. "Where'd you hear that from, Pete?" MJ asked, laughing inwardly at Peter's response as his eyes darted a bit, trying to remain unsuspicious. "Wait! what's that?" Emily pointed back at the video which was still playing, The video was now filming the caught criminals as they were being escorted into the police cars, masks still on their faces. "Huh, weird way to hide your identity, but I guess spiderman does the same right?" Ned answered. "Yeah, but do you think their part of a gang? Why matching masks, and why samurai-style?" MJ also asked. They further inspected the video, zooming in to get a closer look, failing to notice Emily's face frozen in concern.
For the rest of the evening, Emily seemed off, especially to Peter, who had already seen the masked men. MJ and Ned paid no mind to it as they were neck-deep in their conspiracy theories about who these masked men were like they usually do with Spidermans nemesis'. Her eyes didn't really shine for the rest of the day whenever she smiled, as if to say she was worried about something, maybe hiding something. Peter thought it was best not to ask as he didn't want to startle her or give her too much of a reason to leave. Soon enough, the sky grew dark and the guys decided it was time to go home. Ned and MJ had their bags slung on and waved off Peter and Emily. "So which way's home for you?" Peter asked as they made their way to the park entrance. "I'm just a couple of blocks that way," She responded, nodding ahead of them. "Oh you're on the way to mine then, I can walk you," They continued to walk together. As they were clear from the park, Peter thought it would have been a good time to ask. "Hey, so... you seemed a little off after that spiderman video, something worrying you?" he looked at her. "No... well, it's just that they looked familiar is all. I just have a feeling it won't be the only time we'll see them..." she looked at the ground. Peter could tell there's something still going on in her mind, but clearly she didn't want to go into more detail. A couple of minutes of small talk later and they were outside Emily's apartment building. It was maybe only a mile from Peter's, so it was good to know they lived relatively close. "Hey, Pete?" She asked. "What's up?" He replied. "Do you wanna meet tomorrow and go in together?" Emily asked from her steps. "Yeah totally, I can text you when I'm here if you want?" She nodded in response to his offer, generally happy to have met some nice people to start the year with.
