I walk, alone, my black oxford heels clicking on the sidewalk beneath my feet. I inhale sharply as I see the familiar Corner Street Cafe. I keep going, not looking at all the couples sharing lunch, laughter, happiness. At one time, that was me. Me and Chandler. Until he cheated on me.

"Colette! Wait up." I stop and turn, not recognizing the voice.

"Adam?" I ask, surprised.

"You remember me." He says, quietly.

"You were like, my best friend in junior high." I reply, smiling.

"Well, it's been awhile." He says, chuckling quietly.

"Five years is more than awhile." I say, my words, tumbling out, unexpected, disrespectful, and rude.

"Yeah." He says noticing the harshness in my voice.

"I'm sorry, just, when you left and didn't tell me, I thought it was because of something I did." I said, looking down at the ground.

"It wasn't." He said, putting two fingers under my chin, and making me look up at him. I blush at the foreign touch. He raises his eyebrows at my blush, but removes his fingers.

I stand there, awkwardly, my hands resting lightly in my pockets.

"Since when were you a blusher?" He finally asks.

"I've always been a blusher." I reply stiffly.

"No, you used to be fine if a guy touched you." He says defensively.

"That was before I started having hormones. Okay?" I said and he nodded, pursing his lips.

"Hey, I've gotta go, but you wanna meet up sometime to catch up?" He asks, smiling at me.

"Sure." I reply shyly.

"Okay, see you soon." He says, winking and then walking off.

"Where were you?" Max asks when I walk into the studio.

"I'm sorry, I forgot something." I lied sitting down on the piano bench.

"It's alright. Let's do Breakeven." He says, leaning on the piano.

I crack my knuckles and begin the introduction to Breakeven.

I'm still alive but I'm barely breathing

Just prayed to a God that I don't believe in

'Cause I got time while she got freedom

'Cause when a heart breaks, no, it don't break even

Her best days were some of my worst

She finally met a man that's gonna put her first

While I'm wide awake she's no trouble sleeping

'Cause when a heart breaks no it don't break even... even... no

I look up as someone walks into the studio.

"Hey, Col." Noah says as he walks over to us.

Max stops singing, so I stop playing.

"My name is not Col, its Colette. You know that!" I said laughing.

"But Col is more relaxed." Noah replies, his eyes twinkling with mischief.

"Whatever." I say, turning back to the piano.

"Hey, why don't you show Max that thing you learned?" Noah suggests smiling. Max raises one eyebrow so I place my hands on the keys, taking a deep breath. As my fingers fly over the keys, creating the chord, I close my eyes letting my feelings take over, forgetting about the people in the room.

"Wow. You remember three months ago when you would barely open your mouth to speak to me?" He asks laughing.

"I still barely talk. I'm just not a talker." I laugh quietly, as Noah gawks at me.

"Not a talker? You talk more than anyone else I know." Noah says as I blush. Max just looks from me to Noah.

"Uh, no, I don't." I say as I look at my watch and stand up.

"You wanna grab lunch with us, Colette?" Max asks and I frown a little.

"Who's gonna be there?" I ask standing beside him and Noah.

"The How To Rock Cast, maybe a couple others." Max replies smiling at me.

"Please come. None of our friends have got to meet you!" Noah pleads loudly.

"I'm not a people person, I'd rather be one-on-one or two-on-one, but more than two and I get really anxious. Sorry boys, maybe some other time." I start to walk to the door, when I'm pulled back.

"Please come with us, I'll make sure you have a good time." Max whispers in my ear, making me blush.

"Uh, I don't think that's a good idea. Like I said, I get nervous around crowds." I try to take a step back, but his hand holds me where I am. The warmth from his fingers feels good on my cold skin

"C'mon, our friends don't bite. You can even sit between me and Noah, if you'd like." Max says his eyes looking deep into mine, searching for a weak spot.

I look from Max to Noah, trying to decide.

Sighing, I look at my watch. "I've got an hour. Then I have to go." I give in pursing my lips as they grin and high five.

Max and Noah both hold out their hands, but I brush them off, knowing that if I take them, I'll turn bright red.

"Silly girl, thinking she can walk without holding at least one of our hands." Max whispers, his breath tickling my cheek and neck. His hand slips through mine and as I predicted, I start blushing, wishing it was darker so he couldn't see me.
