"Hey." Adam says, standing in front of me.
"Hi." I say, waving slightly.
"Is this seat taken?" He asks, pointing to the empty seat in front of him.
"No." I shake my head, yearning for another bite of my meatball sub.
"I need to tell you something." He says after sitting down.
"Alright." I say, taking a bite of my sub.
"I'm your brother." He says and I gasp, lodging a meatball in my throat. I start coughing and he gets up, runs over to me and does the heimlich.
"You don't tell me stuff like that while I'm eating!" I scold, wiping my mouth on a napkin.
"Sorry, I just didn't know how to tell you." He says and I roll my eyes.
"Well, you told me. Now what?" I ask and he sighs.
"After the funeral, your coming back here." He says and I glare at him.
"So, Max told you. Well, no I'm not. I'm going to live with Aunt Tricia and continue my studies there." I say and he shakes his head.
"No, your coming back here. Your gonna live with me, dance at the academy, and play piano for Max. Got it?" He asks and I stand up, grabbing my stuff.
"No, I'm not. And you can't make me." I storm out, huffing angrily.
'The nerve.' I mumble, walking into my building.
"Good evening, Colette." The doorman, Tom, who is 18, says as I enter the building.
"Do I look stupid?" I ask, putting a hand on my hip.
"No ma'am you don't. In my opinion you look mighty intelligent." He says his thick southern accent making me smile. As a kid Tom was an army brat and learned respect early on. He goes to the same college as me, but different majors and he plans to go into the military.
"Awh shucks." I say, my own accent creeping its way into my voice. He smiles and I go on up to my apartment, ready for bed.
As I unlock my door I hear my phone ringing so I go and grab it off the hook.
"Hello?" I ask, leaning against my kitchen counter.
"Colette, please just listen to me." Adam says, pleadingly.
"My decision is made. And if you had grown up with me, you would know that once I make a decision it's going to happen. Now goodbye." I say, hanging up. I feel bad for using the 'you weren't here so you don't know anything about me' card but, whatever.
I grab my sandwich and head for the couch, grabbing the remote as I sit down. I turn it on and start channel surfing, finally settling on Austin & Ally. Your never too old for Disney Channel!
*the next morning*
I grab my suitcase, struggling with my casted arm, and head outside, turning my key in to the receptionist. I get outside and hail a cab, tossing my stuff in the trunk and telling him where to go.
We get there and I do all the required stuff and then get on the airplane, sitting in the window seat and texting Tricia and Zayn, telling them I just got on the plane and that I'll see them in a couple days. I plug my earbuds in and pull out my newly bought Kindle.
"Miss, you're going to have to turn all electronics off until we're in the air." One of the stewardesses says so I quickly turn my phone and Kindle off, smiling at the empty seat beside me. I look out the window and then back towards the middle, and suddenly the seats not so empty.
"Well hello there." The boy beside me, who has brown hair, hazel eyes and the cutest smile says
"Uhm hi." I reply shyly.
"I'm Austin." He says, holding his hand out.
"Colette." I say, shaking his hand and smiling.
"Well, Colette, it seems we have a long flight ahead of us, why don't we get to know each other?" He suggests and I smile, completely forgetting about all my problems because for the next six hours I'm going to be someone completely different.
