I'm sitting in the emergency room, a blanket tucked around me. My arm is throbbing, the bandage around it tight, and my foot hurts really bad. I'm not exactly sure what went wrong. All I know is one minute I'm smiling and getting ready for the kick-twirl combo I nailed this morning and then all of a sudden I'm on the floor, holding my arm, trying to figure out why I'm bleeding.

"Ms. Smith, it's time to go get x-rays." The nurse, who's wearing plain purple scrubs, says, going behind me to wheel me to the X-ray room.

"Okay," She says, putting the brakes on my wheelchair, "If you'll hop up here, we'll know what's wrong in just a little bit." I hop up onto the table, relaxing as she moves my right arm into position and then goes to take the X-ray. She comes back out and readjusts it then goes back and takes another. The next time she comes out she takes my left leg and tells me to lay down. I obey, wincing as she moves my foot into position. After another couple X-rays she tells me I can get back in my wheelchair.

"Okay, we'll have the X-rays ready soon." She says after helping me transfer from the wheelchair to a bed and putting a thicker blanket on me.

I lay back, not really watching the tv. I'm analyzing my every move, trying to see what happened, why I fell.

Flashback

I step out onto the stage, my shirt flowing with every step I take. I get into position, nodding at Mrs. G who gives a thumbs up to the guy controlling our music. I hit my cues and then grin as I come to my favorite part. I jump, my foot straight, toe pointed. I start twirling and then put my hands out, frowning as the ground rushes up at me. The music stops and I make a strangled cry as I feel something warm and sticky on my bare stomach. I grab my right arm, feeling the blood go through my fingers. I notice a throbbing pain in my foot as Mrs. G comes running up to me.

"Colette? Can you hear me?" She asks loudly. I nod, taking my good hand and motioning to my hand and foot, unable to talk because of the pain.

"Help is on the way, sweetie. You'll be at the hospital in no time." She says and I grimace as I feel blood slinking down my leg after going down my stomach and shorts.

"Colette, can you hear me?" One of the paramedics ask. I nod, thinking he's cute.

"My name's Jake. Everything's going to be okay. What hurts?" He asks so I point to my arm and then my foot.

"Okay, I'm going to need you to move your hand." He says so I take my left hand off the bloody mess.

"Good, now can you move the fingers on your right hand?" He asks, taking one finger in his hand. I try to move it, unsure if it worked.

"Well, I'm pretty sure you broke your arm, but it could just be a fracture. Let's get you a bandage." He says and then turns to his partner and says some stuff. They put a bandage around my arm to stop the bleeding and then put me on a gourney and wheel me outside, everyone following. They load me onto the ambulance and rush me off to the hospital. After several minutes of answering questions for paperwork, I finally got to just sit there and relax, only to be interrupted minutes later to go take those stupid X-rays.

Flashback OVER

I grimace as the nurse walks in, frowning.

"Ms. Smith, I'm afraid I have bad news." Another grimace.

"Your arm is broken in two places and your kneecap is shattered. You also broke two toes." She says and I sigh, loudly.

"I'm sorry. The doctor will be in shortly." She says and then walks out.

Twenty minutes later, the doctor walks in, carrying a box of medical supplies and a pair of crutches. He props the crutches up by the door and looks at me.
